I'm applying for a part time job in a petrol station after seeing it advertised online. They want you to email your CV but I would rather visit the manager in person and hand in the CV and cover letter. Would they be annoyed at this or what would I say to them? Like smile and say i'm here abut the job, and here is my cv and then just leave??

In a lot of larger companies, the manager of the store doesn't have the hiring power. CV goes online, usually to the area or regional manager, then candidates are approved to be interviewed by the store manager. At least that's how it works in our company. When someone comes in with a C.V we have to tell them that they need to apply online. This might not be the case with the petrol station. Apply online, and then call in with your CV and perhaps mention that you have applied online and wanted to leave your CV in store also. Good luck with the job! I often wish that we could give the nice smiley people who come in with CV's the chance rather than the randomers our area manager seems to present to us!

Awh thanks so much for the best wishes! That is an interesting input, the shop goes under the Daybreak company, wonder would it be like that so??

It may well be, since it is a big company. Follow through with the online application and definitely chance going in with a CV&Cover Note too. It can't hurt! I would probably try to hand it directly to who you think is the manager, so try daytime hours on a mid weekday I suppose for the best odds of them being available. Hope it goes well for you!

Damn...I rang today and found out when the manager will be available so she will be there in the morning. Would it not look too pushy if I emailed it as well as call over?

If it's tomorrow then don't bother with the online application, just be prepared that it may be a necessity :)

Also it doesn't particularly matter whether you can sign it, it's an online application so it wouldn't be expected. It is handy to have a keep an image file of your signature on your PC. Just take a pic of your signature in good white lighting on your phone, message it to yourself and then save it when on PC next. Can be handy to have for various online forms.

Just checked the ad again to see ''contact arrangements must be followed exactly as stated by the employer as they are the preferred method of contact''. This is in bold.

Also I have addressed the cover letter to the manager by her first name as someone told me her name, im assuming this is not appropriate then, should I just say ''to whom it may concern''

Actually, lots of big retailers in places like Dundrum SC ask you to drop your CV into the store. Appearance is important for these jobs and this is a way of vetting potential hires on that score without needing to say anything. :)

I used to work for Topaz and they refuse to take cv's in store, you had to apply online. Not sure if daybreak is the same though...

I wouldn't use the managers first name, seems a bit too "personal". Is there a name included on the ad? I usually write "Dear Hiring Manager" when I'm not sure who I'm addressing it to.

They contacted me this morning and interviewed me at lunch! It went well but when asked if I had any further questions, I said I didn't, my friend was concerned as it wasn't showing initiative but everything was talked about beforehand and they made me aware of all aspects of the job. They told me that they had a few more interviews to conduct and would contact me Monday with an answer

Ahh, I don't want to be mean, but in lots of entry level jobs being able to follow instructions is the most important characteristic.

    Just sayin ....

Sorry to hear you didn't get the job. Good luck and i hope you get another one soon.
Just to note, I think it would be a good plan in other interviews to say something like "no questions - i did want to know about xyz but you covered that earlier"
