I hate the way Americans refer to 'full stops' as 'period'.

Does anyone ever use these things on the phone for punctuation or messages?

Colons and semi-colons. What's the bloody difference and when do you use one and not the other?

Yep, I know I'm embarrassed because I'll happily use all the apostrophe's I can even if I have to use them when it's not grammatically appropriate

Colon for listing and semi to join 2sentences together. I love the hyphen!

I hate improper use of apostrophe's grrrr

    I don't think that's right about colons and semi-colons
I think semi-colons are for lists
I don't think colons or semi-colons are used to join sentences, because sentences always end with a full stop  hate them

I hate question marks. They make me horny with their curviness.
I do like the exclamation mark. It means I can say sh!t all day long.

I always thought the semi-colon was a bit half-arsed, frankly.

Don't get me started on the Interrobang‽

What's wrong with being horny? Is there any other punctuation thingie that could give you some release from the hornyness generated by the question mark? You know, there's lots of other punctuation thingies to choose from? And have you noticed that I've used a question mark several times here?

    Or maybe you haven't?

Punctuation is a key part of everyday writing. Otherwise the phrase "I helped my uncle, Jack, off a horse" becomes "I helped my uncle jack off a horse".

I don't know why but it annoys me when people put a space before punctuation. Like this !

Or this ? What about this little comma , and his friend question mark ?

I'm open to correction on this: colons are used in a sentence between two clauses which could be complete sentences in themselves.

Semi-colons I find most useful for separating items on a list when those items contain commas, not sure how correct it is but I've never been called up on it. The rest of the time I just use it as a diet-colon, if you will.

    Semicolon, me hole!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 477 ✭✭The Strawman Argument

I always thought a semi colon was somewhere between a comma and a full-stop. Like, there's a clear connection between the two parts of the sentence, so having it broken into two sentences would make it flow poorly but just using a comma makes it as if the second part is following up directly on the first while it's more likely to be a strand of its own? ...dunno if I'm explaining it well there at all. Either way, I find using them makes me marginally more coherent to myself, if nothing else.
Pretty sure everyone's too uncertain of how to use them to ever call me out on it if I'm wrong :D

Meanwhile, regular colon is where the contents after the colon are entirely dependent on what came before it, attributes of what came before, something like that.

The difference between then and a cat is that a one has claws at the end of it's paws and the other is a pause at the end of a clause.
