Ok, so this has probably been asked loads of times, but does anyone know a GOOD Volvo specialist who knows their stuff and one you can trust to do a job properly, oh, and be reasonable on the pocket....

(ok - asking a lot here, but surely there is someone!) :D:D:D

Have a 2005 Volvo V70 Geartronic D5 which I've owned since she was 11 months old..... she now has 254k miles and the only thing that's ever broken on her to-date was an alternator bearing.

I've no intention in selling her, but there are a few bits that need doing:

    1. Have a "Gear Selector Service Required" light on for the Geartronic - effectively I cant use the manual up/down any more - suspect its just a microswitch that has failed.
    2. Have a vibration in the brakes and wheels - I know I probably need new discs/pads, but I suspect the problem might be to do with ball joints and/or bushings more than anything else. I have an "Anti-Skid Service Required" on as well.
    3. The gearbox is becoming a bit clunky when downshifting to a stop - not sure the gearbox oil was ever even changed, but again could do with a going over.

I know there was a Independent Volvo Specialist in Erne Street, but havent heard any reviews...

So, what se ye - know anyone good?

    Rowan.

    That's great mileage!

Scullys, Clontarf, Dublin 3. They have a seriously good Volvo fixer.

Maybe a gearbox specialist is more apt.

That would be my suggestion too.

Don't know the guy, but he's highly recommend from various sources

Cheers... she's a great cruiser.... hands-down the most reliable car I have ever owned..... hoping to get another 250k miles outa her!

Heard Scully's mentioned before... will give them a shout and see what the deal is....

Nice to see that photo! Very sadly we drove our old faithful 1997 850 Estate to Hammond Lane last week and left with a cheque for 80 Euro.
It was a few miles short of 200K. The (original) clutch was on the way out + several other things, and it would have cost too much....but in ten years of ownership we were never left stranded.
I was looking for a replacement more modern V70 but they are priced at quite a premium, plus the CO2 is on the high side. But hey there are one great bus :)

So, just thought I'd post a quick update on this one.... (I hate when you read topics and there is never an update on the service experience )

Dropped the car in yesterday to Jim and the team (first of all, Jim Scully is a very sound chap to deal with!).

Gave them the list of jobs and things doing (mentioned above) - they kept it overnight in order to give it the once over and focussed on the electronic issues. (I should mention that there were some other electronic gremlins at play I didnt care to mention that I was going to look at myself, but realistically we all know I would have never got around to doing them :D namely a dead rear wiper motor and the wiring loom to the rear tail lift was broken).

Anway, long story short - turns out the Geartronic (Tiptronic to the rest of you non-Volvo types :)) was a cheap fix @ €35 for a microswitch and 3 hours labour..... a far cry from the minimum €1,000ex VAT which Spirit mentioned to me before!!!.... also wiring loom repaired, rear wiper motor replaced, bulbs, wiper blades etc. All in all about €400 - worth bearing in mind the rear wiper motor was about €170ex VAT of that alone!

Being the decent chap Jim is he is even driving the car back over to me in Sandyford this evening (cant get better than that!). Granted, he hasn't checked the brakes yet, but I told him to check that on the drive over and I want them to sort that next week. Jim thought the gearbox was fine, so maybe the electronic Geartronic issues were at play there.... time will tell...

All-in-all so far so good and I'm very happy with the service so far from the team in Scullys.... will keep you posted as the other bits are sorted next week.

    R.

Totally agree.... had my fair share of new BMW's, Mercedes etc.... nothing comes close to this motor for comfort, spec and reliability.... I'd replace it in the morning with a new V70 but prices are a bit steep and I'm a fussy fecker for spec....

I want my dark exterior colour, light interior with leather, heated seats, sunroof, bla bla bla...... to be honest, other than a 05 plate on the car and 252k miles this car still drives like new and I'm well happy to keep driving her for another 250k miles......(even Jim thought she drives very tight).....
