Classic Weekend Car - Ideas?

Was ringing around getting quotes on a very old 'run around' car in the family and as it was coming up to 15 years old (1999) the loading was becoming excessive. However, from talking to the insurance companies, it got me thinking about classic cars (Something I've never had much interest in) As in some cases it was working out cheaper to insure something over 20 years old. And with the tax bracket of 30+ years old being very favorable, as a weekend car, what's the most amount of fun you can have on a budget?

Obviously the likes of the 911 springs to mind but a decent example would be rare on the ground and priced to match, but it just got me thinking.

Anyone have something in the garage for the rare sunny day?

Loads of us over the in the classic car forum do :)

My vote would be for a Porsche 924. Cheap to buy and run, fully galvanised, decent room for stuff and pretty reliable.

Thanks Lightning. Certainly a Porsche would be a favourite of mine. I'm guessing 1985 or so is the current cut off for classic / vintage classification?

Mods, feel free to move this thread if its more appropiate elsewhere :)

Drop over to the classic car forum and ask there. Lots of very helpful people in that forum. Plenty of good choices depending on your taste. A nice 3 series from that era would be a nice run around 318 etc. Maybe not sporty enough if your looking for that type of thing.

The idea would be to keep something somewhat daily driver but also a little sportier for the odd fun commute or weekend blast.

Absolutely on the radar. There is one in Bray and I often admire it. Bonkers little car.

I thought it was first released only in 1989 so can't 30 year old yet.

20 years old or more for most insurance companies to deem it as a classic afaik.

Yes but a mx-5 is not expensive to tax anyway and as these cars start getting to the age of qualifying for classic tax their values start rising due to the appeal.
