Best setting dog

Plan on getting a new dog I have a springer for ducks was thinking English pointer ,german pointer,english setter. irish setter any ideas lads and which dog do you think is best for pheasant shooting cheers

There all very good bird dogs i have bias towards the english setter because the start setting from such a young age but the right dog in any of the breeds will do the job

Will all depend on the ground u shoot . If it's small fields with high ditches u cant see over then a German pointer would be the dog.

Just out of interest how would a german differ with the land you described over a setter or english pointer?

The German pointer doesn't range as far out as the English pointer or the setters.

Personally I prefer keeping my english pointer in those kind of fields ,he ranged away one day this year not far ,around corners and bends, and I thought he had ****ed off but as it turned out he was 30 ft away down in a gripe locked on a pheasant ,and here was me thinking he had headed on home

imo i find pointers are the better but then again i grow up with pointers and never had setter,but each person is different tho.

as browing fusion said the right dog ,any one of them once they hunt cover and retrieve land and water I favour the reds but hunted over them all a good one of any and your laughing.

i like germans also.if you get a good one out of any the ones you described your laughing.its like spiting hairs comparing

Hi i have a red setter. She will be 9 this year and she is a dream to hunt with. She was very easy to train as a pup, lovely temperament. At a year and half she was backing up another setter and since then has been rock steady. As others have stated all breeds are as good as one another.

I'm the same. Not much knowledge of gun dogs but I got a pointer last year because my father took me out hunting when I was very young and he had a lovely pointer bitch. When she died he got another one. Pure liver colour an I shot my first pheasant over her amongst my first other game species : snipe, woodcock and even a hare though is don't shoot them anymore.
He had a springer but she was useless and he got a Brittany but he was useless also and was more a pet.
Hopefully this year landlord will ease up on us and I can get a dog and il be going for German pointer bitch

I have red and white setter 10 years old dog has been great dog for me got a pointer setter cross last year working very well this year.I find that the english pointer start setting younger
