    do the modern common rail diesel engines need heater plugs to start or are they capable of starting without?

    I reckon the aul tractor engine that's running on 80's tech in my primera would start without them! Not good in the long run though.

    Don't modern diesels use the plugs once they are running sometimes while the engine is cold to help with the combustion and minimise emissions.

    Pretty much. Mostly for emissions bullsh*t though.

    Mech DI engines usually have no glows

    They've done that afterglow thing for years. It's a case now that it's as important a function as starting the car. Stops it clogging up dpf's and stinkin like a old bus from poor combustion.

    its a fiesta 1.4.

    bought it 5 years ago and was getting injector seals done and was told one heater plug was broken in head but it would not interfere with it starting?

    now i wonder why the heater plug was being removed and broken if they dont need them to start.... am i making any sense?

    Emmisions bull has a function now since every second person went out and bought a diesel. Wouldn't fancy walking about dublin if everyone there was putting out the same emissions as some our yolks did :pac:.

    Ah that's ok a friend had a car like that. It just means that only 3 cylinders are hearing on start up. If it was extremely cold it might be slow to start but a decent battery and it should be fine.

    thankfully it starts fine,,,on very frosty days she sounds a bit lumpy until it warms up,,,,can live with that..
