Giving less notice than contract stipulates

It looks like I may soon get an offer for a permanent job, probably in the next week or two. However, I am three weeks into a six month contract. There is no chance of this being extended or renewed. I would like to take the permanent job but my contract states I must give 8 weeks notice. What are the potential consequences if I am able to only give 2-4 weeks notice?

Legal action, bad reference, damaged reputation as Ireland is a small country, etc.

    Legal action is quite unlikely.

Any time i have gone for an interview, I have been asked my notice period. I assume if you are close to being offered a job you have by now been asked what your notice period is and if so, you should have told them the truth, 8 weeks.

If they have not yet asked you, they will very soon in which case you tell them your notice period is 8 weeks,, that its in your contract. You can tell them you will talk with your current employer to see if a deal can be struck, but until that happens, consider the notice period as being 8 weeks.

You can up and leave and as mentioned legal action probably wont happen, but as mentioned, Ireland is a very very small place, you only really learn how small when you've been working a few years, and even smaller when you work in a particular field/area where you constantly bump into the same people, so dont burn bridges or pick up a bad reputation.

Eight weeks notice in a six month contract job sounds pretty unreasonable. Unless your skills are specialist enough and you are well enough paid that your new employer should be willing to wait for you.
