Quick VRT / Licensing cert question

    Hi guys,
Someone here will have done this recently..

The VRT on our new car has been paid and a new number issued.
I have paid the motor tax online yesterday.
I understand that paying the motortax triggers the Licensing cert to be issued.

I'm looking to book an NCT but have no Licensing cert.

How long does it take for the Licensing cert to be posted out after paying the VRT & motor tax ??

Murphy's law states that if I accept a cancelation NCT next week I probably won't have the cert in my hand

    Cheers..

it doesn't matter, you can do the test and show them the cert later, if they want it, (they often don't)They just wont issue your cert until you present it.

    Great..
I wondered would they do that as the last time I NCT's my jeep I stupidly forgot my License and like that I just had to pop in the next day and show it to get the cert..

    Thanks for the reply..

I'm waiting for a call back and now I won't be worried about accepting a near cancellation slot if I can get one..

Not wishing to hijack _Brian, but to pay the VRT, you have to go to an NCT center for the inspection / valuation I thought? Can they not NCT at the same time?

    no they wont do that.

Not really, I did a VRT just yesterday and inspection/valuation is really a man coming outside for a second to verify mileage and WIN number. That's it. Even their website tells that NCT is a separate booking at separate time.

That would be too simple, woulnd't it?

If you import car which is over 4 years old, it gets registered in Ireland at the day of VRT inspection, and it gets due NCT straight away from that day (that's a legal requirement), but physically you can only book your test few days later, and with current appointment waiting times, you might be stock without NCT for weeks or moths, having your car illegal to drive straight away after registering in the country.

Unbelievable you can't get them both done on the same day. I assumed, which was wrong, that they were done at the same time. Even if it took the time slot of two cars, you could easily make up the slots cost. I doubt VRT inspections are all that common on the grand scale of duties.

My car was VRT'd last Monday, showed up on the motor tax site Tuesday so I taxed it that morning. Got the tax disc and log book in the post Friday.

Surprised how quick it came to be honest.

Just to follow up on the thread..

The VRT was done Monday, I picked it up Tuesday and taxed it Tuesday evening.

Although the VRT has been completed the new licensing certificate will not be issued until you tax the car. Likewise the details of the car will not be sent over from VRT to NCT booking until you tax your car, they simply say that car doesn't exist.

So the car showed up on the system today but as expected no slot for NCT to be had, they put me on a priority list. I cannot get confirmation of being on the list, they only send out confirmation of actual appointments, she said I'd get a call in the next few weeks as there are very few cancellations at present.

So, I was in a bit of a bind as the Insurance company are refusing to transfer the insurance without a valid NCT cert. Rang NCT back and no good, just wait I was told.

Got quite annoyed about this and went to the RSA website (NCT essentially work for the RSA). I logged a complaint on their ststem explaining my problem.

20 minutes later I got a text that I had a date in my chosen center in two weeks.

Insurance company still won't play ball. So I'm cancelling the policy (€95 rebate) and re-insuring with a different company who don't hold the NCT so rigidly. The broker offered to transfer me to such a company for €650 but I declined, I really felt she was gouging me as she knew I was stuck for insurance !!. Went online and got a quote for €350 fuly comp with company indemnity, breakdown and glass cover, the policy document has no mentions of NCT, I'll be taking this policy out tonight online!!

    Such bother !!

The annoying thing is I often park at the local NCT centre to meet people and its never busy.. 1-2 cars outside and a definite casual feel to the place !!

    System is a joke - that's it.
I doubt there is any other country within EU, where upon importing a car from abroad, you can't legally drive it for few weeks or months.

or, is there any other country in EU where car test requires a booking and then waiting for months?

my car was VRT'd on Tuesday, taxed yesterday. Today is Thursday and I'm still unable to book NCT as system does not recognize number plate. Same with eflow and alike. apart from motortax.ie website my car technically 'does not exist'.
