I need help determining what are the entitlements for a 3rd level student who is unable to complete their study on medical grounds. They have not worked before but are currently seeking work. How long do they need to be out of the college course and not working before they qualify for JSA ? Do they have a better chance of getting a job if they register with social security asap, or are they better off staying off the live register and trying to get work themselves ? How soon after dropping out of college would they qualify for a FAS course or JobBridge ?

They will qualify immediately on leaving 3rd level education. They will need a letter from the college saying they have left their course, finished with college etc. No point in delaying making claim as it will be backdated only to the date of application, minus the first three days.
Information here about Jobseekers Allowance http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/unemployed_people/jobseekers_allowance.html giving the rates and explaining about means testing (which includes parents income if the applicant is under 25 and living at home) and age reduced payments.
The fact that the person left college on medical grounds may come up as JA applicants need to be fit for, seeking and available for full-time work.
There isn't a qualifying period for Fas (Solas) courses but there might be a waiting list for certain courses.
For JobBridge the qualifying criteria is to be in receipt of a qualifying payment or signing for credits for 3 months (78 days) or more in the past six months.

Left collage on medical grounds but now looking for (presumably) full time work? They may question that further...
