Can a public or civil servant be sacked?

Let's say they do something really mad or are really not up to their job. I just want to know if it is a myth or not that civil and public servants are never sacked?

    Anyone here know?

I have never heard of any public or civil servant being sacked. I asked a friend of mine who is a guard and he has never heard of a dismissal either - he claimed people are just moved if it gets bad but never sacked:confused:

And those at the top only ever seem to "resign".

Maybe sackings do happen but here is a thought.

The dept of Finance was central to the mismanagement of the finances of this state right up to the disaster that destroyed so many lives in 2010. How many of those civil servants were sacked?

It's just given the consequences people suffered you would think a clear out would have happened. I couldn't see a company letting their accounts department for example away with something proportionally as cataclysmic for them.

You never heard about the two gardai outside the American embassy in Dublin in 2006 so. Not just young rookies, they had years of service and carried guns

Abandoned their post and fooked off for pints. They were thrown out of the pub a few hours later for arguing over whose round it was. One drove home and was caught for drink driving near Ballymun.

    Both suspended and then dismissed.

A young guy in Cork in the Navy told his girlfriend details of his next patrol, word got out and he went to jail for it

There's a last word sketch on the incident with the guards in the American embassy from then it's hilarious imo
I can't find it any where it seems of been lifted if any one knows a link it be great it was a series of two key stone guards of the same name a young recruit and a near retirement guard
Back to op I live with a service worker and bar you really cross the line like assault or gross misconduct you might get the chop
But in relation to incompetence your accommodated
