    Hi guys..
We're in the sticks and have managed to have a copper wire connection to the exchange 4 miles away. We're using the standard Eircom ZyXEL 1000 router and getting ~1.5Mb download.

I appreciate we are on the edge of what's possible regarding distance from the exchange.

But I was wondering would a better router make any difference regarding speeds..
I wouldn't mind updrading if it got me up to 2Mb download..

I was wondering about picking up a router from Argos and trying one out, I could return if its no better..

    Maybe something like this

What do you think, I've been told these standard Eircom routers are muck..

If you want to improve sync speeds thats not what you want, its a cable router, not an ADSL2+ one.

Post your line stats first off. Google how to do it.

my Belkin modem just after packing it in, normally sync between 7 and 9meg on it. A friend who has fibre has given me a lend of his old ADSL2+ Eircom D1000 modem. It is giving me close to an extra 2meg compared to my old Belkin.

    my stats now are:

    Speed: 10141 kbps/670 kbps
    Line Attenuation(Down/Up): 34.6 dB/ 18.9 dB
    DSL Noise Margin: 6.0 dB/ 17.8 dB

I need to buy my own modem would I be best ordering a D1000 from Eircom and how much do they charge for one?

They may give ya one for free.

6dB is borderline, you *may* be more stable on a 9Mb profile.

There is no guarantee that a different router will give you a better speed. The line could be totally rubbish. Mine would not support 'broadband' at all and I never got more than 12k on dial up. I'm now on fixed wireless.
