    Tax it.
Don't think you can do it online though

The mere act of taxing the car is all that is needed to cancel the off-road declaration. You'll have to tax it for at least 3 months and you have to do it at your local motor tax office.

Q11. What if I want to put the vehicle back on the road before the period specified in the declaration expires?
A11. You can cancel the declaration at any time by renewing your tax in your local motor tax office - the validity of the tax disc will commence from the first day of the month in which you tax the vehicle.

if you don't tax it and get caught, you'll have to pay the tax right back to the last time it was taxed. as said, all you need do is tax it, you'll have to go to the tax office or do it by post though

    Well I actually doubt that.
If anyone gets caught driving car declared off the road, they will suffer consequences of driving untaxed car, and making false declarations.
But I can't really see anyone forcing to tax the car.

It's likely the consequences will be at least the equivalent of the cost of taxing the car otherwise it would be pointless.

Well, the whole system is pointless in the first place.
But actually in OP's case, where he only declared car off the road since January, cost of paying back tax wouldn't really be hard to bite I guess.

Im in the same boat, only needed one car while wife was off the road for 6wks after having the baby.
What details are needed and can I get my wife to tax it for me as I'll be in work?

When we filled in the form on 3rd January , obviously could'nt see into the future and know exactly how long the car was going to be off the road .

A start date and finish date was a requirement on the form , I could only estimate 3 months ahead .

But an emergency has now come up , and car has to go back on the road this week .
