Having trouble insuring older car

    hi all,

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, feel free to move if necessary.

My fiancé has an older 94 Toyota carina e and is having trouble getting a reasonable quote. Everyone we have tried ( FBD, 123, AA, ONE direct, liberty etc) are looking for €1000+ and are saying because the car is more than 20 years old. The book value is only €500.

My fiancé is 32, full licence, 6+ years no claims and no penalty points.

Upto last year she was getting quotes of around 300-350.

Any advice on what to do or should be just suck it up?

Try first Ireland insurance brokers. They do insurance for older cars.

the value if the car has little bearing. It's claims experience that determines premiums and the biggest costs involved are for medical and legal costs, not car repairs or replacement.

Companies are reluctant to take on older cars, why is she switching complanies? Once you get cover on an older car, you are usually better off to stay with the same company

Nice one, called them and got a quote for €581, any other recommendations?

Try AIG. I had my 94 corolla with them for years and at 320 euros per annum.

Thanks but they will noT quote unless I'm an existing customer, otherwise if the car is 15 years or older they need to send out some guy to individually look at it and might take a few weeks!

    Any other ideas?

May be time to switch to something newer? If insurance is costing that much, a newer car from and insurance might not be much more. The lack of ABS, and it's crash safety rating will have an impact on insurance.

If it's a diesel carina e and you're looking to sell I'd offer you something for it!

When the insurance up? If you've a few weeks left you could wait for AIG or push them a bit they might be able to accomodate you.

You could hire a car cheaply enough at this time of year if you were stuck for a week waiting on an assessment.
