Leap card did not tag off

I recently used my Leap card for the first time on the Dart. Travelled from Bray to Dun Laoghaire, no problem .. €4.70 deducted and then €2.29 refunded as it should be. On the return journey, €4.70 was deducted, but nothing was refunded at the Bray end. The barrier was definitely closed when I approached it, and it opened when I presented my card, so I would have assumed it was accepted.

Now, I raised a query with Leap and they came back and have refunded my €2.29, which is great (apart from the fact that I apparently have to go to an IR ticket machine to claim it!) but I'm wondering what could have caused this malfunction, as there was no mention of it in their email reply.

The only thing I can think of was that I went through the barrier at Bray just after midnight, not sure exactly when, but probably only by a few minutes. Any ideas?

The time should make no difference at all - the day continues as normal (from a LEAP card perspective) until 04:29.

Leap wouldn't really be able to explain, as they have no control or visibility on the devices.
