Hi lads, feel a bit silly asking such a simple question but here goes.

Im cleaning up a country garden with some potatoes this year. Im getting a lend of someones drill plough.

Question is, i roughly know that you use the drill plough to make the drills, then i can plant the spuds by hand. How do you use the drill plough to cover them in again, do you put the points into the middle of the drill?

    apologies for my ignorance.

Fix 2 pipes in the middle of the boards get 2 back seats off berg go carts and fix on the back of the drill. Then get 2 young lads to fire in the spuds as you go along one pass job done.:D:D:D

We used to do this years ago and I still can't remember how we used to close the drill after planting.

    It's his neighbours drill plough.

    It's his neighbours drill plough.

Yeah he could still put pipes on it without damaging it. It's the best way to do it. And good luck op with spuds this year.

thanks for the replies. I wouldnt be tinkering with the mans plough !

I just thought if you put the drill plough back into the middle of the drill and shifted the soil over a bit, im thinking out loud here!

Yeah they done this yrs ago,

They open the drill and put in dung and spuds and then closed them we used to turn the plough around and reverse back. I just drilled a few holes into the plough here and bolted on the pipes. I can take them off for the veg.

Edit for putting down the spuds your way you need the depth control and draft working on the tractor

Yes as I said we use one for planting earlies just put pipes down and let the spud drop in as the drill is being formed

We used to take off one of the bodies at the side then drag drill plough through high part of drill to spread soil onto the planted spuds in the hollow. Would need a tidy up with a shovel afterwards

You can make drills, drop the spuds in the alley and split the drill over them. Don't do to many at a time cos you may push a drill a little.
Alternatively, and I've done this several times, particularly if the ground tills up nice and floury . Make the drills and using the handle of a shovel or the like make a hole in the drill, like a dibber would, and drop in the spud. It's ok to do this if youre only dealing with a small amount of spuds.
