I've been looking at Legacy diesel (same engine) and can find no negatives. They don't seem to suffer with EGR or DPF problems like so many other diesels. They still manage high 40's mpg figures despite the permanent AWD and they're generally well screwed together reliable cars. I personally think the styling of the Impreza is absolutely hideous unless you go for a higher spec model and even then it's not the best. The Legacy is a much more attractive and desirable car.

Its a shame the whole range is so ugly, I'd have one in a heartbeat if they looked half-right.That Outback!!!!..Jesus...and the Impreza...savage,..

I actually don't mind the Impreza looks wise at all. I think it's better looking than the i30. It's no Alfa, but fine. I think most people hate it more because they grew up loving the Rally spec saloons, and this put them off, but if you look at it in context of the typical hatch in that class, it's grand.
The engine is good, the handling is decent, the 4WD is a great plus, they're well screwed together, I'd say go for it.
It's possible to get high 50's if you're really light with the right foot on longer journeys.

Yeah not expecting a hot hatch :) just want something decent with enough puff. Was looking at an auris but god they are awful. And coming from a 2.2 D4D Toyota verso I don't want to downgrade power wise. The cheap tax is a plus on the impreza too, only problem is the dealer is dragging on another full week due to a full service being done.

I'd say go for it, you'll be happy.

Friend of mine had a Subaru Forrester (petrol) for 11 years - swore by it and did a huge mileage - it was a great car. Only reason he didn't get another was because he wanted automatic and diesel which wasn't available. Very good cars - very tough and long lasting.

Are you looking at a particular car? If so, what mileage is on it?

Has it a full, reputable service history?

Has 12 months warranty from the dealer :) No NCT but I think it should fly through it 1 previous owner. Just got told to avoid by one of my mates because of the diesel engine, he says they are problematic? is this true? he says that the 2009 backwards models weren't good with common engine problems. This didn't put me off and I think its a big lie because I've owned a 2.2 Toyota which is known for gasket failure. Drove that yoke for 5 years nothing but filters and oil have been changed. Strong car too bad the tax is too expensive :(

Why buy a car off the dealer with no nct? Get them to NCT it first!!!!!

They're doing a full service now, if it doesn't pass i'll just take it back since it's got 12 months warranty

That's why I asked about the service history - some pre 2010 models suffered from crankshaft failure. I don't think that a full service history is any guarantee that it won't happen but it'd be better if the right oil had been used every 15,000km. I've also read that glowplugs can be very tricky to replace as they're prone to snapping on removal which can mean the engine has to come out.....

Yeah its got full service history, is it a chain or belt engine by the way?

Its a chain. They're a great engine. I put 90,000km on a '08 Legacy. No issues with it but it was a lovely smooth diesel that loved to rev. Plenty of torque too.
