The discount is now extended to journeys involving multiple operators so if you (e.g.) get a bus to your Dart station, then hop on the Dart and use Leap for both journeys, you will get a €1 discount on the 2nd fare.

The National Transport Authority has today (February 2) extended its popular “Leap 90 Discount” feature to give a €1 discount to Leap Card users transferring between Dublin Bus, Luas, and DART/Commuter Rail within 90 minutes of the start of the first journey. Third and subsequent legs, too, will be discounted by a further €1, if they start within 90 minutes of the start of the preceding legs.

People aged 18 and younger with a Child Leap Card will enjoy a 75c discount on their second and subsequent fares.

I had no idea this existed.

The best part is that if your second trip is a city centre fare -- it's free!

This is great news and long overdue. Now lets see leap promoting this properly so passengers know that it is available.

Handy for journies like DART to Connolly then onto the luas over to Heuston / Tallaght.

Yep it's great for me. I get the DART from Killester to Connolly and then the Luas to Tallaght and back every day. For me though it just means it takes longer to hit my €40 weekly cap that happens on Friday morning. Still get free Leap travel for the weekend though.

Still quicker and cheaper for me to drive. €25 petrol does me for the week. About €20 now with the drop in fuel when I can get hold of the car which is rarely.

plus tax, insurance, possible nct, cost of buying the car, cleaning expenses, annual servicing, unforeseen repairs, parking fees, potential road tolls, etc.

Does the discount apply if you're moving from one mode covered under a monthly ticket to another mode not covered under a monthly ticket?

No - it only applies where you are using the epurse for each transaction. To be fair, you're already getting a discount from the monthly ticket, so why would they give you more?

This is mainly aimed at people who use public transport occasionally, or those who make short trips.

I've benefitted from the Dublin Bus LEAP90 frequently since it was launched, on days when I've made several short (minimum fare) trips within 90 minutes, with the result that I don't have to use a day off my rambler ticket.

I have just noticed that there is a discrepancy between the Leap Card website and Bus Eireann regarding the zones. The Leap Card site includes Arklow and Gorey (https://www.leapcard.ie/en/_uploads/Bus%20Eireann%20Zonal%20Map.png) whereas the Bus Eireann site only goes as far south as Wicklow. Also Newry, Monaghan (and Carrickmacross), Longford and Portlaoise are missing.

I guess the Leap Card site is the accurate version?

The map on the LEAP card site is a bit dated.

There are no PSO services to Newry, Monaghan, Longford, Portlaoise, Arklow or Gorey from Dublin - only Expressway. LEAP is not valid on Expressway services.

It can only be used in the Eastern region on the list of routes on the Bus Eireann page to which you linked above.

Also, note that the discount does not apply to Bus Éireann services, only to Dublin Bus, LUAS and Dart/Commuter rail.

If I use e purse with the driver for a €2.05 fare, and within 90 minutes of first boarding get on a second bus and ask again for a €2.05 fare with the driver, how is the discount applied?

What I mean is on the double bus journeys I occasionally take, I don't use the card reader.

I'd imagine it is automatically applied using tag on/off on DART and LUAS within the 90 minutes.

    Thank you.

It happens automatically, the system calculates the times between your journeys, and applies the discount as appropriate.
You will see the second journey listed as €1.05 on your transaction history.

Thanks lxflyer. It is a pity that the full BE network isn't covered by Leap.

This tulip again. The above post might have been valid if the decision between public transport vs the car was a binary one, i.e. one or the other. In reality, there are plenty of people for whom public transport is viable for commuting, but make other journeys where it is not suitable. These people incur the fixed costs (which I have struck out) regardless, and the elastic/variable costs are the only ones relevant to costing PT vs the car for a commute. Maybe insurance could vary with mileage as well, but minorly all considered. Servicing and likelihood of repairs as well as tools will obviously be elastic and related to mileage, but considering the other fixed costs is treating it as a situation which does not exist for a lot of people.

Sorry, a bit off topic, but oversimplifications irk me! Glad to see the Leap 90 discount extended further, even if I may not have much use for it personally.

Good.. normally my commute is bus+bus, but sometimes bus+train - option 2 got too expensive after they introduced the bus discount, but now both options are worth it again.

+1 a two leg journey that I take now and again which costs €3.10 on two buses (€2.05 X 2 less the €1 discount) was costing me €4.46 (€2.05+€2.41) on bus (€2.05) followed by Dart (€2.41) but now that I can get the discount on the Dart fare, the B+D journey is reduced to €3.46.
