Looking at buying an Astra 2.0 cdti maybe 2010+

Can't think of a better place to get a broader opinion than you lot here.

I'll be commuting to Dublin and Limerick so a diesel is certainly the way I want to go and with 165bhp I don't think I can go wrong.

I've looked at other competitors like the golf tdi Audi A3 and focus but the Astra catches my eye and I keep going back to it.

    So basically whats good ? What's bad ? What's your opinion ?

I had a GTC with that engine for a little under a year, and have had a few more as loaners. The Astra is a little underrated in my opinion. They're comfortable on long spins, drive well, ride well (especially on those 17s) and are pretty quiet. That one is a nice spec too.

The engine however feels old school, is a bit noisy and agricultural. It's not bad but the VAG 2 litres are much better. The gearing is quite high meaning 6th really is only of use on the motorway. It's also not overly economical - I averaged about 44mpg out of mine and that took a little trying to get. It was a mix of motorway, main road and a small amount of town driving so it really should have been better.

Make sure it has Bluetooth - it was an option on each spec even though the buttons were fitted. Elite spec has pretty much everything else covered though.

Looks like a Vauxhall Astra to me.

If you want to sell it in the future it might be more difficult than just having an Opel Badged one.

Got the Insignia version of that and its super comfy, makes a great cruiser for motorways/long distance.

Had an astra as a hire car a while back. Very nicely balanced car and seems to be of decent quality too
