I'd avoid an '07, purely from the tax perspective, unless you could get it substantially cheaper. The '08 will be the new model more than likely, and will be probably at least half of the cost to tax. Of course it will be dearer to buy. It's €710 to tax a 2 litre car pre '08.

Just check that the oil pump issue (chain driven pump) is either not an issue, or has been addressed by the previous owner. On the '08 models you should probably be ok, the '07 could be ok also but worth checking. The fix was to replace the chain driven unit with a gear driven pump and strengthened hex shaft. It's a very expensive problem (or write off really) if it goes wrong.

Other than that, I think they're a great car once properly looked after. Make sure you get a full and proper service history, and do the usual checks - these cars are a favourite for the clockers and clocked cars, esp. ex-UK cars, are very common. Almost got stung with one myself.

Good choice... First 07 and 08 will generally be 2 different models unless late registered as model changed in 08.
I have a 05 2.0tdi 140bhp sline a4 at the moment. As for the oil pump issue its only a big deal if it goes... I replaced the hex bar in mine b4 it could go...cost €6 to replace the bar. Audi changed from the chain driven oil pump to gear driven 1 in mid to late 06 so you should b fine.. The BRE engine code should have the gear driven pump.
Egr does give some bother on them.. As for the 140 or 170 it depends on your pocket and what's out there.. Just remember a 140 remapped will hit the 170 or above.. But from experience extra power is great..... But the 1.9 is far more reliable...

say you get an emissions cars v cc, keep it 3 years, the tax saving is E440 a year, x 3 = E1320. Now of course the 08 will be worth more when you sell it ( I am comparing like for like models) but it will be a 10 year old car, yeah it will be worth more than the 07, but not much... Also I wouldnt be surprised if they change they in the not too distant future increase the motor tax rates on emissions based cars, it not just the motor tax they are taking a hiding on, its the VRT, you can now buy an audi a7 with E270 a year motor tax and thats from a V6 diesel. Its actually only 2g over the E200 rate!!!

It will be worth a good deal more than an 07. A time will come where a pre 08 2.0 is practically worthless.
To put it another way, if there was little difference in price between an 07 and 08 A4, why on earth would you buy a car that's 500 extra a year to tax?

yeah but thats the thing, at least from what I have observed with BMW's I am looking at, the difference in cost between an 07 v 08 runs to several thousand extra, to save several hundred a year. (Also if you are borrowing the money, you have to factor in extra interest on the few extra thousand you want to borrow to save a few euro in tax). The price in no way makes up for the cheaper tax or fact it is a year newer. The 2008 is going to be near worthless when it is 10 years old. At that stage it wont be a case of some people opting for or having to go for the older tax system car, even at this stage an 08 is already 7 years old and if they need cheap tax, you can get a smalllish engine car on the cc rate, they are cheap to tax.
