Scotland: Advice on Courses

    So here's the plan

    • Ferry to Scotland for a week's Golfing.
    • 2 days to be spent watching The Open at St Andrews.
    • Play up to 5 days of golf on Scotlands finest links.

I have a friend who is a member of Machrihanish, so hoping on spending a couple of days playing it and the neighboring M Dunes. Troon, Turnberry and Muirfield are prohibitively expensive and The Old Course is other wise engaged. I like the look of Western Gailes but what other courses would anyone recommend?

    Royal Dornoch
    North Berwick
    Prestwick Old
Gleneagles Kings(not links but absolutely stunning :))
    Dundonald

Any idea where you're going to base yourselves?

Nothing planned yet. Probably a couple of nights in Kintyre (Mull of) playing Machranish, staying with a friend in Edinburgh when going to St Andrews. Otherwise reasonably flexible.
I should have said cost is a factor, so Dundonald at GBP50 after 3pm is on my potentials but Prestwick at 150 or Gleneagles at 180 is too expensive. Prepared to push the boat out one or 2 times for the likes of Nth Berwick but otherwise would need to limit the Green Fee to GBP 70 or below.

Crail is a good option and within budget - the balcombie links.

There is a second course in North Berwick which is superb value and very under rated compared to its neighbour,

    Crail sounds interesting.

As far as the website says North Berwick as having the West Links and a Childrens course. Could you be mixing it up with Gullane which has a highly ranked no 1 course and no2 which some people say is its equal?

The other course in North Berwick is called The Glen - it's great fun with great views. Played both courses last summer.

So if your friend is a member at Machrihanish, I'd spend a few days down there just replaying Machrihanish and Mach Dunes with perhaps a day trip over to Islay to play the fabulous Machrie and do a whisky distillery tour. Also a late evening swing with a half set around Dunaverty.

But if you are going to choose two locations (and you are staying in Edinburgh), I'd head to North Berwick and play the West course and Gullane No.2 (which is practically as good as No.1 but £60 cheaper). Glen doesn't compare to the Gullane courses. If you want to add in a little extra bit of fun, play the 9 hole Musselburgh course (held 6 Opens) with hickories on your way.

I'm conflicted about going out to Islay to play Machrie. On the one hand, if I'm that far already I might regret not going the extra step. On the other the additional ferry over and back is an extra GBP85 that i could use on Green Fees else where.
I'm bringing my 15 yr old son so Whiskey tour might not go down well with his mother. If only he was a year older I could get him to drive me around the distilleries:D.

If I spend time in Edinburgh, I'm keen on North Berwick & Gullane 1 &/or 2.
