Time to Close Cork and SNN airports, and turn Dublin airport into a British runway

The media and politicians seem to me to be missing the point. The direct routes between Irish airports and the rest of Europe, North America etc are far more valuable in national terms, and far more at risk, rather than landing rights at LHR. People prefer to fly direct.

Airlines like to create a single hub and provide connections via that hub, which is at variance with the customer’s needs and demands. The IAG LHR hub does not have adequate runway or ATC infrastructure/capacity to offer a reliable, on-time performance to the customer. Ireland has been a neutral country since it was founded, and there is no reason why an Irish citizen should be inconvenienced by the hyper-“security” measures at British airports to get to a destination that one up to now could fly directly to.

It seems to me that the plan is to turn Dublin airport into another British provincial airport like Manchester, perhaps providing fewer flights with larger aircraft between Irish airports and LHR and use the spare slots for other purposes. There is no need for Cork or Shannon airports – the powers that be seem convinced that the idiots who live outside of Dublin will be happy to drive/rail to Dublin airport (where there is no railway station), and stop again at LHR en route to where they really want to be. Leading to hotel expenses, surface transport expenses, and delays, which LHR is famous for. Not to mention baggage handling systems that break down.

BA has increased its landing slots at LHR from 36% of slots in 2001 to 51% in 2013. Mainly by buying other airlines (eg BMI). BA will get a third runway on the cheap – Aer Lingus is worth 2.5 billion € including slots, equipment, goodwill, and a fleet of aircraft that one doesn’t have to wait for five years for delivery. Irrespective on the value imputed on Aer Lingus, the value to business and leisure travellers in incalculable.

I have no idea what you were planning to do with your rant. But as with your "Aer Lingus at risk of terror attack" thread this is going nowhere.

If you want to contribute to the debate on the IAG takeover offer then do so with the rest of the posters here in a fitting manner

    Thread locked for trolling
