Flying with an engagement ring?

    Hi Folks,
I'm looking to fly with an engagement ring. Problem is, the g/f will probably go through all the luggage before we leave. What's the best way to smuggle it in?
I'm thinking about just taking the ring - leaving the box at home - and putting it in my wallet. But I'm scared of getting it damaged.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers!

Put the ring in the luggage after your girlfriend does her inspection.

I know my wedding rings came with 2 little pouches, is there any way you could get your hands on something similar?
I wouldn't put it in your wallet tbh

And definitely don't put it in your luggage that your getting checked in (I know u prob weren't going to do that anyway). Bring a man bag and keep it close to you at all times. Or perhaps wear a
Jacket with an inside zip pocket and put it in there. dont put it in your wallet.

Carry on a small bag and put it in that. A manbag type thing.

Keep it in its box and put it into the pocket of a jacket. Ideally one with a zip. Put the jacket through the metal detector with your other stuff when you are going through security.

Yeah, I think put the ring box in an inside pocket of a jacket. Don't put it in the wallet, it's too risky - think of how many times you'll be taking your wallet out in the airport, you don't want to risk it falling out.

When are you going? Would you have time to go shopping for a new jacket for the trip if you don't already have one with an inside zip pocket? If the box is particularly large and bulky (possibly noticeable through the jacket, or would be felt if she gave you a hug) pop into your jeweller and ask have they got a small ring box - most of them will have little gift boxes or something.

As rainbowtrout said, leave it in the box, put it in the jacket, and put the whole lot through the xray machine. I'd say the guys at security have seen their fair share of rings going through in pockets etc. so they'll be well used to it!

Thanks guys. I don't think I'll be able to bring the box. I think it'll be too big and hard to hide, but I'll probably put the ring in some form of protective casing/bubblewrap and hide it somewhere. I have a Nikon D300 with a battery pack, but there doesn't need to be a battery in it. ;)

Do you not own any pockets, OP? A ring box isn't a bulky item.

Am I the only one with the opening scenes of Midnight Express flashing through my mind at this. Depending on where you are flying - you may be asked to take a picture with the camera to prove it actually works and is not an empty case holding nefarious items. Best case a slightly embarassing proposal at the airport... worst case cavity searches at the same airport (followed by a more embarassing proposal)

I do, but I'll be using them for other things!

The battery pack is an extension of the camera. You can use one battery in the camera to power it and have an additional battery in the battery pack. You can even have the second battery in the battery pack with space to spare.
Also, who on earth asks you to take a photo to prove that your camera works?!

Airport security often ask you to show that any electrical device you have is functioning in its intended purpose. Laptops, iPods, etc

Will you not have to empty your pockets at security?
Do you have a jacket with zipped pockets? You can just out it through security without fearing it will fall out of the pocket.

I have brought my, iPhone, iPad, iPod, laptop and cameras through airports many times and have never been asked to do this once.

That's grand, but I'm not flying to the USA, and the camera would still work as I said in the post above. Think I might go with that... :)

Might be a different story when it goes through the xray and they see something concealed in it. You wouldn't want to get a stickler of a security guard who's having a bad day.

You could always swallow it and retrieve it at a later stage......
