Irish delivery price info from Amazon.co.uk

I'm getting driven demented by Amazon.co.uk and the roundabout way it seems necessary to see if something can ship to Ireland or what the shipping cost might be. I used to go about this by pretending to buy an item and then checking the delivery information just before paying, but now I just put it in my basket, edit it and then select the pull-down delivery estimate option. But this is very roundabout and becomes frustrating when you're checking out lots of different options!

Am I missing something obvious or is there no feature on Amazon.co.uk to easily see delivery charge information when you are logged in like there is with eBay? ??

I think I am missing something! can you post a link to the item?

EDIT: I thought you were trying to buy an item like a computer game actually called "driven demented"!

I have always done what you seem to do, go to checkout and see the price with VAT and the shipping cost. Is this not working for you or do you just want an easier way?

Amazon do "free" delivery if over £25. I tend to add on small items to get over this, like t shirts on offer or something.

"I thought you were trying to buy an item like a computer game actually called "driven demented"!" :D

No, am just looking at getting some items under £25 or from third part sellers that wouldn't qualify for free delivery. The issue is that half the time the items can't be delivered here but Amazon doesn't tell you this until you actually go about buying them. E.g. if you search for example for "tester", the first item on the list (Compact Digital Multitester With Diode And Hfe Test) can't be delivered to Ireland but you actually don't get told this until you try to buy it.

I could be wrong but I find the £25 free delivery only applies generally to Super Saver Delivery items or items directly from Amazon.

If you buy from Amazon.co.uk and have an item shipped to Ireland in most cases you will be charged delivery unless it meets the requirements of a special offer. The VAT rate will also change from the lower UK rate to the higher Irish one. This means if an item was say £30, converting this directly to euro before you go through checkout won't be an accurate price. You can work through checkout to get your final price without completing the transaction. Apart from that use Parcel Motel.

Just order more than £25 worth and there's no delivery charge if you opt for "super saver delivery". As long as items are sold by Amazon of "fulfilled by Amazon"
I just don't bother looking at third party items.

Mate I clicked on that multitester and it says in red writing 'Sorry, we can't deliver this item to Ireland.'... Funnily enough I then picked the first 3rd party seller 'electromart Uk' and it allowed me to go all the ways to payment. However postage was 14 pounds.

Would you not just pay the 3.95 for parcelmotel? For that that tester yoke most of the 3rd party sellers ship within the UK for free so it would only cost you the 3.95.

    View all sellers for product.

If seller shows "Domestic delivery rates and return policy", it's UK only.

Otherwise, if the seller shows "International & domestic delivery rates and return policy", then it's highly likely it ships to Ireland.

    Potentially equally roundabout, though.

This is something Amazon could easily make simpler, when you've logged in with an account that has delivered to Ireland it shouldn't be hard to figure out that this issue might be of interest to customers.

Amazon does say whether items can be delivered to ireland, on the product page when you first look at an item (you've gotta be logged in, with a delivery address registered). The below screens are from the UK site.

Also when you are in the basket if you are logged in on the right hand side you can click on the arrow next to "Estimate VAT, Postage and packaging" that should show you how much postage it will be, you can select the address from the drop down.

When you get to the checkout though you find out that while items "can be delivered to Ireland" tha seller you have chosen or that Amazon has chosen for you does not deliver to Ireland.

I'm having trouble replicating that and haven't come across it before, could you link to something that shows it?

And if the item you want is under £25, order something that hasn't been released yet but puts your order over £25. Then cancel the unreleased item from your order and you'll get the item you want with free shipping. Worked for me once but don't know if it was a bug and a one off or whether it works all the time

This works a treat, been doing it for bout a year now no hassle, i just add the item i want to my cart along with a dvd/bluray that is up for preorder but has not release date yet (if it has a release date then the item you want wont be shipped till that date).

The item you want is shipped first as the 2nd item has no release date yet so once you get the item go back into your account and cancel the other item...

Simple but effective, obviously dont tell anyone....

Wasn't there a ruling that only VAT will apply in the country you're buying from, so you're only paying for UK VAT instead of IE VAT, have i got that right?

No - you have it wrong.

There was a change from 1 January 2015, so that supplies of telecommunications, broadcasting or electronically supplied services (e-services) to non-taxable persons (consumers) will be charged to VAT in the country where the customer is resident. Other supplies are unchanged. So when you buy from Amazon.co.uk you will still pay Irish VAT.

If a seller (I.e. Amazon) has sufficient sales in another country (i.e. Ireland) then they have to register for VAT in that country. This means that sales to buyers in Ireland will then incur Irish VAT, not UK VAT. Amazon will then make payments to the Irish Revenue for these sales, rather than making payments to HMRC.

Irish made software, made in Dublin.... 2 miles from my home

Cost in Ireland Euro 169.00 delivery Euro 15.00 (fifteen euro)
Cost in the UK GBP 69.00 delivery to Dublin GBP 5.00 (five ponds)

Who can explain why so different? Seller is the same company.

Yes and no. Once foreign retailers supply above a certain amount of goods and services to Irish consumers they are obliged to register for and charge Irish VAT and remit it to the Irish Revenue Commissioners. The annual limit is quite small so most business distance sellers will be caught.

Because they think people will pay it? Like most companies!

Could I do this on a item that costs 5 euro? Then just cancel the unreleased item after I order?

I use parcel motel and just give their northern Ireland address. Yes I'm paying for the service but I usually available of the free delivery being offered by Amazon to their UK residents.

they offer free delivery to irish residents as well. And if you get it delivered to a UK address then it is the UK government that will receive the VAT you paid not the irish one.

There is a limit of how much trade you can do before you have to start charging the VAT rate of the country you are selling to. Small UK suppliers won't get hit with this but Amazon does.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,386 ✭✭✭✭rubadub

The limit is €35,000 -quite small as mentioned. This has hit some UK sellers really badly, I wondered if some dropped sales so much that they might fall outside the threshold the next year.

Some items are zero VAT in the UK and full VAT here, like cycling helmets are 23% here, 0% UK
