Need a change (from 2010 focus)

Currently have a 10 focus hatchback 32000 miles on it. Great car but with 2 kids and a big dog need a bit more room. Don't have much cash to put in to a new car. What are the chances of a dealer doing a swop for a car same age or a year younger. Was thinking about a volvo v50.

Any ideas? Not into the selling privately lark.

Have you put a focus and a v50 side by side and checked how much extra room you get? Nice car but they are a smallish estate. Well the year I looked at one was anyway. Just check if you haven't already!

It might be possible in your case.

As the Focus is a popular car and your one has low mileage which should sell easily, a dealer may swap it with a Citroen Picasso although with higher mileage.

However, the most sensible thing to do is sell your car privately and you'll get more of a choice and better value.

It all depends on car value
but dealers probably wont do a direct swop. They would be providing a warranty, they want to make some profit.
On two cars that are 'worth' the same expect to give the dealer at least 2 grand.
All that said find a car you want and see what they say

No dealer will do a straight swap irrespective of the market value of either cars. They are in business to make money and also selling your Focus on will cost them money in that they have to tidy it up for resale and offer the next owner a warranty. They also have to give you a warranty on the car you want to swap it for. Either way it's going to cost you money to "swap". And while the Focus is a popular car there also no shortage of them for sale second hand meaning resale values are not strong.

The best way to do this is sell your car privately and negotiate a straight deal discount off the other car. Also while the V50 has a more practical boot being an estate it still uses the Focus platform so passenger room is no better than your Focus.
