What kind of car? Be sure to take a good look at it, some retawrds decided to apply tow bars that involve taking a chunk out of the rear bumper, especially on passats, golfs and the likes. Them yokes are welded on, so it'd be quite difficult to take it fully off. Some have a bolt or two going across them, so that you can take off the "head" of the tow bar, leaving the rest of it hidden behind the bumper. If that's not the case with your one, then I'm sure it could be cut off and the wiring just pulled out.

Thanks for reply. It's an Almera, the tow was used for trailers and such related to farming I believe, appears to be bolted onto a frame from underneath - was told it's a proper functional one after.

Is the bar part of the structure of the car now. On some( don't know about Datsuns) cars a structural crossmember has to be removed and replaced with the hitch. You may have to leave it and if you'll never use it just cut the swan neck off.

Bumper off and normally 4 bolts holding it on.
Easier to unbolt the ball itself or swanneck.
A lot of lads say its better to have a hitch on a car . it helps protect the car in the event of being rearended

That's what my Da said :) I managed to go a whole day without falling over it so might just be easier to leave it so.

Thanks, yep looks like it is - I think would be better to leave it be, I'm aware of it being there now anyway :)
