Visit Agios Nikolas & Elounda in Eastern Crete.

Agios Nikolas is a small town, pretty lagoon. Elounda is a very pretty fishing village, take a trip out to Spinalonga ( Former Leper Colony up to the 60's)

Visit Knossos if you are into history.

Best beaches are in the south of the island, worth hiring a car and go exploring !

Crete is a wonderful choice for a holiday. I dare say you will revisit at some stage.

    Enjoy.:):)

If you are the athletic types, try and fit in the Samaria gorge trip. Bring a camera and small day pack with food and water. It's a long day. Up at about six and near eleven pm when home again. Good hiking boots essential. Hire mopeds and get into the interior. Some amazing ruined windmills and tiny villages to see.the smells of olives and wild herbs will stay with you. Also the smell of two stroke oil! Enjoy.

As previously posted...if you are able to hire a car, take a trip up to the Lasithi Plateau, up in the mountains (it's well signposted). You can visit the Diktaian cave while you are up there.

going with my girlfriend to crete in may, was there myself when younger and loved it, we are staying in rethymnon and i am thinking of getting a car or moped while there, never driven abroad before, is it much hassle? id have no idea where to drive to, any recommendations? is it easy to make your way around the island?

Give way to farmers in 3 wheeler moped-trucks :)
Don't drive around all day with your arm out the window, you'll get some burning!
Many filling stations do not allow you to self fill your car/bike. that's the attendants job. Take it easy and enjoy.

From what I have read on trip advisor cash is far more favorable in Crete
