Things you were expecting to be bad but tuned out to be good and vice versa. I've broken it down into 3 categories.

    Films
    Places
    Other

I'll start with the things I was expecting to be bad but were actually good.

Taken 3: After the second film I wasn't expecting much but this really surprised me. I thought it was very entertaining.

Malaga: It was kind of a last minute decision. For some reason I thought it was going to be just another sunny resort but its probably the best place I've visited.

Foam rolling: Don't mock me yis bastids. :D I bought a foam roller recently. It's kind of a deep tissue massage thingy. The exercises look a bit silly but jasus I feel great after using it. It gets all the knots out of your muscles so it does.

And now for the stuff that was unexpectedly bad.

12 Years A Slave: More like 12 years of stares. I had high hopes going into this but I hated the style of directing. A lot of long pauses with characters staring into the distance for several minutes at a time. I was like WTF?

Lisbon: It looks lovely in the photos but what a dump. The whole place bored the hole off me.

Girl on top: I just find this position extremely uncomfortable as it tends to bend my mickey back. It looks deadly in the films but I never liked it. :o

So what was unexpected for you?

Exactly the feng-shui in that place is all wrong! Always bugged me.

I'd have categorized that under "things I expected to be awful but turned out to be brilliant"

    Unexpectedly good:

Taken 3: I'll echo the OP, it's been slated by many critics but it was entertainig despite some gaping plotholes.

Can't really think of any place that surpassed my expectations. Not really a place but I remember in 6th year, our debs committee got slated for arsing around most of the year, organizing a poor fundraisier etc. so they ended up booking a 3 star hotel in a certain town in county Wexford. It was actually a class night. Unlike most debs in 4 or 5 star hotels, they had very few security personnel around and we pretty much had the place to ourselves. Bar stayed open way later than it should have and most people were still drunk at midday the following day. Incredible night and far better than the usual stuffy affairs where the bar closes at 1:30am.

Other. I was persuaded to do this voluntary summer camp last summer and went into it pessimistic and hungover on the first day. At the end of two weeks, I'd met some incredible people, had a lot of fun and made some lifelong friends. An amazing experience.

    Unexpectedly bad:

Movie: There was a lot of hype about the film Boyhood last summer but I found it incredibly boring and formulaic throughout. The only unique aspect was that you saw the actors age in real time but apart from that, it was very boring.

Place: Swansea in Wales. An absolute dive.

Other: College isn't as fun as it is in the movies. There are a lot of fun nights out but during the day, you find yourself spending a lot of time on your own during the day and mixing with new people can be hard. Also, you actually have to put in a bit of work

I agree. Another film that got great reviews from the critics. Critics seem to go crazy for sentimental fluff these days.
