Eye shadow-straight across or 'press down'?

    Hi just wondering why does one usually (especially make-up artists) press the eye shadow down rather than simply apply across in line with the flow of the eye-lid? Hope you can understand what I mean :)

    Applying the eyeshadow in a patting motion on the eyelid, with a flat shader brush, helps to pack the colour on and maximise the payoff of the eyeshadow on your lid - you'd then use your blending brush to blend away any harsh lines.
