Braking clank and pedal goes stiff

    Hi,

V50 2006 - Over the past 3 weeks this has happened 3 times. Go to brake - hear a clank, pedal goes hard....no braking. Quickly pumping, kicks in brakes after a couple of more clanks.

Of course I immediately dropped it into my mechanic. He physically looked at everything (pads, discs etc) and couldn't really find any problem. Next he is going to drain down brake fluid but thinks it could be a problem with the master cylinder.

Any ideas guys? It sounds to me like a more mechanical problem with the clanks.

Stop driving it until it is resolved.
This is a very dangerous situation.
If your mechanic is unable or unwilling to diagnose the problem, I suggest you contact a more thorough garage.

Pedal mechanism or master cylinder sounds likely. + 1 on a proper garage

Hold on now a minute, if it's not happening often and not happening when the mechanic is checking it out it will be very hard for them to pin point the problem. I don't see anything from above that suggests that the mechanic is unwilling or unable to diagnose the problem.

all too often People are too quick to jump to "find a new mechanic" conclusions on here.

You think its OK to drive around with faulty brakes?
Brakes are the one thing that you cannot take chances on by driving and hoping the fault might not happen.
If something happens its not an accident it will be classed as negligence.

Why don't you take it to a brake specialist, they've most likely see that problem before and know how to fix it.

It sounds like the linkage to the brake servo is broken.

Thanks for the replies guys. Looking like a faulty servo or (a previous poster said) linkage to the servo.
