Losing packets on my DSL Connection

    Hi,

Currently with Magnet Broadband and after the hassle of getting these KN Networks guys to show up its working about a week now.

The speed is fine for DSL (around 15mbit) however I think its on the edge of this profile as its dropping out every so often.

    Uptime: 0 days, 7:18:36

    DSL Type: ITU-T G.992.5

    Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 2,520 / 19,802

    Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [GB/GB]: 1.99 / 1.92

    Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.6 / 17.5

    Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.4 / 18.1

    SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.4 / 6.1

    System Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / ----

Chipset Vendor ID (Local/Remote): IFTN / BDCM

    Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

    Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 1,114,099 / 14,505,658

    Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

    Loss of Link (Remote): -

    Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 1,181,210 / 1,000,339

    FEC Errors (Up/Down): 1,545,691 / 296,279

    CRC Errors (Up/Down): 5,983 / 897,806

    HEC Errors (Up/Down): 4,294,915,094 / 474,704,419

    Any thoughts ?

I'm thinking of contacting support and asking them to switch me to a more stable profile.

Its fine for browsing/netflix etc but for RDP/VPN/VoIP its terrible, with dropouts every 30 seconds or so.

Haven't used DSL in many years ... still amazed that such speed is possible over two tiny bits of copper wire hanging off poles coming into your house :pac:

    Edit:

    Here's what happens.
    Ping statistics for 85.91.6.43:
    Packets: Sent = 95, Received = 91, Lost = 4 (4% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 21ms, Maximum = 45ms, Average = 22ms

Wow that's a lot of errors, ask them to reduce your profile speed down to about 15 or 16MB to see if it stabilises.

You are syncing at 19,802 Kbps but that's not a defined profile speed (as in 2048 / 5096 etc) so the line can't handle it's current sync (24MB I imagine).

    Fox is dead-on.
Noise margin is fairly low, hence the drops. Attenuation is fine but you've a awful amount of CRC errors there.
Get the profile lowered. I assume you're on a 20/24mb profile, get it down to 18, see if the noise margin starts to increase.
Ideally, that should be ~10db for a bit of headroom.
At that stage, a high amount of CRC errors could suggest a possible cabling issue - but see how you get on with a lower profile first.

US is struggling more and that'll really cause issues as its the more limited side of the link, there's a 17_1 profile, that'd be ideal.

Ok, so contacted support, they said they would "tune the line" so I guess they modified the profile:

    ptime: 0 days, 0:11:58

    DSL Type: ITU-T G.992.5

    Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 998 / 11,998

    Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 10.52 / 51.94

    Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 429496728.4 / 17.0

    Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 8.6 / 19.6

    SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 8.6 / 9.7

    System Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / ----

Chipset Vendor ID (Local/Remote): IFTN / BDCM

    Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

    Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 35,481

    Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

    Loss of Link (Remote): -

    Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 11,504

    FEC Errors (Up/Down): 8,646 / 17,853

    CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 62,964

    HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 632,253

    Same problem :/

    Ping statistics for 85.91.6.43:
    Packets: Sent = 51, Received = 49, Lost = 2 (3% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 24ms, Maximum = 52ms, Average = 28ms

At 12_1 I'd expect better rates considering your attainables are up at 19. Theres a fault there somewhere (assuming all your equipment is filtered and you dont have a failed handset or alarm).

No Alarm or Phone plugged in as its dry DSL.

The box on the wall has a builtin filter as far as I can tell, was installed fresh by KN Networks.

The KN Networks guy routed the cable through the attic to upstairs and left some exposed wires with joins in the hall downstairs, said he was going to come back with a box or something but never did.

Kind of annoying now that I'm getting 10mbps instead of 19 with the same packet loss.

Sounds like shoddy workmanship plain and simple.

    Gets more strange:
That's a router issue for sure, have you got a spare to test with?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,208 ✭✭✭keithclancy

Gah... now its completely unusable ... the connection completely drops off for around 5 minutes the comes back again.

ffs .... I'm thinking of just cancelling the whole thing and going back to my alternative :)

FFS ... it seems during the day its usable then at night time its constantly disconnecting.

Any ideas ? I've replaced the connector the KN Networks guy put in that was hanging out of the wall and soldered the phone cable properly.

If the SNR is borderline you can find it holds up until peak times when the noise floor rises and then it goes to Sh1t. Need to get their techs out to check the whole line not just internals.

Are you using wireless connection or cable ?

If wireless, may the wireless sinal be the problem. You can try to connect your pc/notebook on the router by a 5E cable to discover.

    hugs

This is a sync issue clear and simple, nothing to do with his LAN.

you should not have that amount of errors, I would get on to your provider to get an eircom technician who is a fully qualified telecoms technician (not kn) to test your line. High crc errors can be caused by poor connections and a high stress reading on a line. kn staff are not trained or qualified staff (unless you call 2 days training sufficient) and I would not let them near my line. I frequently have to sort out their mess on the network. bunch of cowboys! okay rant over.
