Doesn't volvo 940 exist in Ireland?

I was looking for a volvo 940 to play around with, I lived in Sweden and 'we' do strange things with them, but on carzone there is only 850 but that is FWD and I need RWD.

740/940 it needs to be, because 760/960 is i6 instead of i4, needs to be 2.3 liter also not the.

the reason for this is because I know how to tune it correctly, 500hp-ish aren't weird numbers for this engine (FT230K).

But it seems they don't exist in Ireland?

Cars are treated as a more disposable item compared to other countries. It's age means many have been scrapped or stored. Keeping a regular eye on done deal is probably your best bet, or importing one from the UK.

    donedeal.ie I imagine.

These cars never sold in large numbers here to begin with as they cost too much to run, and given that the newest examples are probably 20+ years old at this stage most will be well gone to the breakers yard. The UK is probably your best bet at this stage.

    Its either a B200 or a B204 - needs a gearbox too.

    There's a 2.3 engine for sale here:

I can get the 2.3 engine from sweden or holland, but it sucks to swap the 2.3 in e 2.0 chassis.. so its way better to get a 2.3 chassis, even the non turbo version chassic will work perfect, but not the 2.0 or i6 chassis.

If you'd be willing to make the trip to the UK there seems to be a handful for sale there, including a few 2.3s

The car is damaged and if you mention to an insurance company all that junk that has been fitted into the car, I am not sure what figure they will come up with. If they are going to give you a figure at all :).

yeah I think I'll just get a car from Holland, I can legally drive in Ireland for 12 months and I will drive back to Holland at least 1 time / year so no problem.
Dutch insurance covers in Ireland also

I think you still need to pay local road tax and this ain't cheap, mate

Vehicle which is owned by or registered in the name of a non-resident person is not required to be registered in Ireland subject to the following conditions:

The vehicle must have been acquired with all the appropriate taxes paid and these must not have been exempted or refunded in any way.
The standard registration plates in use in the domestic market of a country are normally accepted as evidence of this.

hmm I see, but i tough there was a 6/12 months rule that excluses this?
but i still dont know what car i will buy anyway :)

in 2012 i had mx5 1.6 maybe ill get that one back , from holland its only 350 euro / year roadtax and my dutch insurance covers ireland for 12 months

A lots of Polish lads tough the same...and local lads driving around with NI plates...unfortunately no excluses - anything that's more than 3 months no tax on the road can be seized on the spot. And planning a trip abroad trick will not work - they are local Guards who dealing with you. They will know your car very soon and they will question your vehicle number-plates if you'll drive around long enough. They simply don't care, you'll get a warning, might be two and that's it. Another hand you can give it a try. You might be lucky

but is roadtax enough or do i also need to pay registration fees and everything? or irish checkup? because its all good in holland

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 502 ✭✭✭Seamus1964

    Not sure.
NCT or similar kind of test to be passed might be required as headlights pointing into the middle of the road (normal for a Left Hand Drive).

i can adjust it and turn it back for the checkup again in holland that is not a problem, i can just get 2 sets of headlights :)
The question is more, if my car passes the dutch NCT (APK in dutch) test with all tuning options, will it also pass here? or isnt tuning allowed in ireland?

(info), hp/nm will be on paper, but tuning options like: exhaust, spoiler, lowering, wheels, bodykit don't need to be on paper in holland it just need to be safe, and there is no rules for lowering, wheels or bodykit, spoiler needs to be within the max size of the car and exhaust needs to be 90db at 4800 rpm or so

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 502 ✭✭✭Seamus1964

Why don't you just drive your Volvo in Holland where there is no rules for lowering, wheels or bodykit and where there is "all good in Holland" as you mentioned several times?
I'm giving ya friendly advise - skip this plan of importing your 940 from Holland and driving it here , you'll get caught and you'll loose your car unless you living in Achill Island and planning to do once and again local road trip on Sunday morning. Or be fair: register your import, test your car and pay road tax like we do

(And stop quoting me, there is really no need, wasting space and it's hard to read)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,469 ✭✭✭Asmooh

Yes, but what if I get a 940 (or any car in that matter), then in one year decide to move somewhere else?
or move back to holland, when I export it I can never import it again.. and to be fair.. no matter WHAT car I want, it seems that none of my ideas are working here.

Engine swap? not allowed, tuning? not allowed

    Price difference:

    Ireland:
Comprehensive cover you pay 827.76 or 12 monthly payments of 68.98
Road tax Rate Per Year : €514

    Holland:
    Insurance: 369,84
    Road tax: 396,00

    Difference: 576,00

they are ****ing insane here in ireland, i did a quote for a 1991 mx5, quoted for 250 euros a ****ing month because they say im a new driver, ****ing have my driverslicense for almost 10 years.

i will just get a car from holland, pay 32 euros a month for insurance and drive 1x /year back to holland to get my NCT (checkup) and drive back again.

    Not going to pay this:
    Comprehensive cover
    you pay 2,441.32
    or
    12 monthly payments of 203.44

If i knew that before they begged me to start working here I would never ever move

If you are from Holland and have moved here to live, you could have taken your car with you and not even have to worry about vrt costs as you would be exempt.
Add it stands, the only sensible thing to do now is buy a car here.

I can still buy a car, the main issue is 2400 euros a year for insurance!
