So I have to go to a wedding in Mexico in May.

Plan so far is that myself and my wife will spend 2.5 weeks in Mexico.

So far as part of the wedding party we have the following plans:
    1. Two days in Mexico city
    2. Three days nearby in the location of the wedding
    3. Five days in Cancun

That means we have a week after Cancun that we still need to plan. The only thing is that we need to fly out of Mexico city at the end of the week. So Far I am drawing a complete blank on what to do for this week. The days in Cancun will be spent relaxing on a beach. We will probably use a day from Cancun to visit the Chichen Itza. Therefore we really want to do something different.

Further down the coast seems to be more beach resorts which we'd prefer to avoid.

Does anyone have any ideas on how we could spend the free week?

2 days in Mexico city? You could spend more than that! I worked there for 2 weeks and went back on hols for another! You can't get bored there. So much to do and see! Guadalajara is really nice too but it's out of the way for you. I reckon you check out DF a bit more!

Hiya, I am Mexican so I can give you a few pointers. Where's the wedding being held? Where are you flying in?

Planning the trip should depend on the type of traveler you are. Cancun to me is just a resort town for foreign tourists. Nothing special about the place. If you want to relax by the beach or pool, then I'd recommend these options instead: Tulum and Holbox Island.

For tours, I do believe Chichen-Itzá is a great choice. You don't get to climb the pyramid but the area is amazing. Another trip you might enjoy would be to the Xcaret, Xel-Há, Xplor or Xenotes parks. Xcaret is for chillaxing, Xel-Há for water activities, Xplor for adventure seekers and Xenotes for diving. You need a whole day for each of these.

If you are the type of traveler that enjoys getting to know local culture, then I'd suggest visiting either Puebla or León cities, which are not too far from Mexico city. Fancy visiting a picturesque town? Then Tepoztlán, Valle de Bravo or San Juan Teotihuacán (where you can climb the famous sun and moon pyramids) are lovely options near Mexico city.

In Mexico city you should visit a pulquería (pulque drink shop), a taquería (taco shop) and a fondita (authentic home style mexican food). Let that city be your playground...

Great, thanks for the input. It is greatly appreciated.

the wedding is in Puebla itself so will be spending 3 days there. Then with the wedding party we are travelling to Cancun for 4 days. We are flying into and out of Mexico city.

Cancun, is not mexico, it is purely a resort town with loads of Fat Yanks from Iowa and Wisconsin drinking their heads off and getting burned.

As your Mexican contributor mentioned, Mexico has many many great places to visit. Car hire is cheap and there are some fabulous places to stay and eat at very reasonable cost. I agree Chichen-Itza is fantastic and a must see for.

Enjoy Mexico City, personally I love it so much to do and the people are amazing apart from "gimme teeps"..:)
