Just wondering, what is Ireland's longest golf course and it's yardage?

palmerstown stud plays pretty long off the back, 7419 yards
    heritage killenard is 7319 yards.
id be surprised if there was a longer course than palmerstown but I haven't played any outside of leinster.

I always found Knightsbrook in Meath to be very long. There must be over 7 or 8 par 4 holes which are over 400 yards. Though every time I played there the wind howled!! Not sure of the yardage.

Yes I played palmerstown last week off the winter tees which for some holes are 50 to 70 yards infront of the championship tees

Palmerstown long off the whites! Par 5's are monsters, they are index 1-4 IIRC

The European is 7355 from blue.

    Impressive for a links.

Killeen Castle from their Black Tees measure 7677 yards

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 249 ✭✭dwd

I though that Kileen Castle is longer, I think its over 7600 yards . I was a member in Palmerstown last year, and played it off the back plates for the laugh in August, and a monster is the only way to describe it, a nice experience just to see what the pros play, although I do wonder if they had a tournament there would they use all the very back tees. I would be long enough off the tee and can usually carry the driver about 250, so depending on conditions would regularly hit out as far as 280, but in reality you would need to hitting 300 consistently off the tee to have a chance at a decent score

Played Palmerstown in Autumn and the indexes have all been re-worked, par 5's no longer index 1-4 which makes sense as although I don't think they're reachable in two off the silver (white) tees they yield relatively straight forward par opportunities.

As said above I think Killeen Castle off the black tees is the longest, have only ever played it off the whites which is long enough but behind that are blues and further back again the blacks. I've never played Druid's Heath but that's supposed to be pretty long also from the black tees (looked it up at it's measured at 7,434 yards)

    Moyvalley - 7370 yards

I like the way this is being discussed as though it's a matter of opinion! :pac:

    Right, can anyone beat 7677?

Wonder what the longest course off normal stakes is. I mean how often would the backs at killeen/palmerstown ect be used.

Used most weeks in summer in Killeen Castle for 'Black Sunday'. It's a beast off those tees. The shortest par 4 is 396 yards and the par 3 8th is 245 yards.

I think it's a damn shame when course difficulty is based upon length, the pro's play most par 4's approaches with short irons and pretty regularly hitting par 5's in two strokes at ease so pretty silly when us mere mortals can't hit par 4's in regulation or have a chance of a par 5 in two due to length alone.
Good thread though, have only played off blues once, must have another go somewhere this year for the craic.

Yea but us mortals have handicaps, Most long par 4s we have a shot on
so a bogey is a net par,
Play the course and use your shots

Those big long monsters, not sure bout the fun of hitting driver and another driver (if you can) off the deck followed by a long iron or hybrid into par 4's. I did play Killeen Castle last summer and enjoyed it but every week and as my club i think it would chew me up and spit me out. Question, whats the longest niner?? Anyone beat Blessed lakes at 6850 off the back tips and used at all medals, scratch cups, Pres, Capts etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 511 ✭✭✭D Hayes

Longest I've played is Adare from the back sticks - 7453 yards. Wasn't enjoyable to be honest...hybrids into most par 4s!

I do not see the point in giving the yardage off the Championship tees on these courses. They are NEVER in play for club competitions or green fees. They are what they are, Championship tees for professionals or possibly Senior Scratch, but even then I have my doubts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 778 ✭✭✭Kingswood Rover

Yea i agree its just testosterone, suppose it is kinda like the top speed in top Marque cars, your never going play that yardage or drive that fast. Gimme Noddy valley, Cill Dara, Castlewarden and me hyundai tragedy any day.

Killeen Castle has to be, but I think they do play off the backs on some Sundays, or did last year in the Summer, regarding the comment about it being Championship not club lengths.

It's a great course but as someone who is short off the tee, this course is a fortress with the green design. Really fun to play though, the par 5's are very Birdieable off the Whites.

Played the very back tees in the European Club over 10 years ago, on a wet and windy winters day, strokes comp it was too.
    One word.......torture.

Bright castle is long. Not sure how long but it had a par 6 760 yard hole up until recently.

A great way to get a (relatively) easy cut is to play in some of the open comps off the back tees. Concra Wood have been doing an open off the tips on the first Friday of every month for the last few years.

Play them as often as possible. Shot 35 in one last year and the CSS was 32 I think. Killeen Castle do a 'black Sunday' from time to time and the CSS can be down at 29 and 30. Mad stuff that you'd never see and a prize can sometimes be had handy enuf with lads just losing the will.

For anyone regularly stuck with opens at their local club that are won by 43 and 44 pts it's a great alternative.

I just shivered at the thoughts of playing there off the backs.

Tiger holds the course record off the backs at the European club, think it's 67. He played it one year as a warm up to the British Open. A few years later, Ruddy set it up to see if McIlroy could give the course record a run. Have to check the facts on this but off the top of my head I think McIlroy shot 70 - was 16 or so years of age - and was well on course for the record until that brute of a par 4 (is it the 7th?) along the sea shore. Think he doubled it or took a seven and was playing it as his 16th or so.

Also, when Tiger played the Euro, he played the 12A hole, the spare par 3 up in the dunes. According to Ruddy, he hit a five iron to a couple of feet, 205 yards into a driving wind. I'd say Tiger wishes he could still do that!

Im open to correction on this but I think there may be an issue with Tigers "course record" there.
Im pretty sure I read before that he hit two balls on a hole for some reason or something to that affect?

Not as expensive as other top courses. Available in an open 3 times a week for 50euro or so

Black Sunday runs once a month in Killeen from June to September/October (it's an open), other than that, medals are played from the whites. The first from the tips is 478 par 4 (if memory serves me) . The best I've done is a drive and hybrid 24' to the green. Rory played 2 years ago from the tips, with the club pro, and hit a drive and a flick of a 9 iron to 6 feet.

Playing off the blacks is good fun, and really gives you an appreciation for what the pros go through on a week to week basis. The 8th being a 245 yard par 3 does not tell the full story, as in calm conditions you only need to hit it 195/200 to run onto the green. Index 1 9th from the tips is a completely different story, and I think the hardest par 3 from the tips is the 16th, which is a 200 yard carry over water to the green.

As an aside when we held the Solheim Cup there in 2011 there was a mixture of tees used, with no black tees in play on any of the days.

You could be right though I never heard that aspect of it. Just looking through Ruddy's book there now about the European Club and he says, 'The most powerful fourball played at the European club consisted of Tiger Woods, David Duval when he was about to defend his Open title, Mark O'Meara and Scott McCarron. Tiger set a course record 67.' Apparently they were made life members that day.

McIlroy's 70 was shot in the 2006 close championship. Mind you, he followed it up with an 80! He was lead qualifier that year with Lowry a shot behind him. McIlroy eventually beat Simon Ward in the final. Anyhow, enough side tracking!

Agreed, Kileen green complexes hardest I've played. High ball flight into them required so off back pegs it becomes a beast.

I was in the European over the Christmas and was talking Ruddy about the record, and he was telling me the rough was very low when Tiger had is 67 & in his opinion Rory's 70 was much better as the rough was higher and the course was playing at its hardest.
but just goes to show how tough it is when the course record is 67 set by one of the sports best!

They were a lot more frequent than once a month last summer, more like every 2 weeks and sometimes in consecutive weeks, but some were 4BBB.

Rory did indeed play it (although I don't think Paul played with him), story was 8 iron at the time and not to 6 feet, but these things grow wings as time passes...

16 is indeed a brute off the blacks, I really like the tee over against the hedge on that one. I think 6 is just as difficult. Tiny, very undulating green surrounded by really deep bunkers and off the blacks into the wind it's a 3 or 4 iron.
Yeah, Solheim was played of the whites on most holes.

You're correct on the Black Sundays, I only played in the singles comps which were run once a month, but I just checked my emails there, and the first Black Sunday was on the 4th of May and was a 4BBB.

I only spoke to Paul about Rory's round last September, and my memory was a 9iron, the hole does play downhill, not sure which of the Pros he actually played with. I know Jack hit a 6 iron to the 14th 185yrd in the driving rain and wind on the "official" opening. They're just a different class.

6 is a great hole, but you do have multiple bail outs, whereas 16 only really leaves you with one option, should you want to score.
