    Hey Peeps,

I have some people coming over from the UK to see me next week. They are starting their journey near Derry but then want to come down to Dublin. Am I right in guessing that there's no viable way to come from Derry to Dublin by train?

No direct route, but they can go go Derry-Belfast-Dublin. I did that last summer and had about an hour to kill in belfast between trains. I quite enjoyed it compared to the usual sights on the Derry-Dublin bus, but I'm easily amused.

You can get the train from Derry to Belfast central, then the enterprise to Dublin, think it's about 2 hrs from Derry to Belfast and another 2 hrs to dublin. Check translink website.

If they do end up getting a bus check the X4 timetable on the Goldliner site as well as the bus eireann route. It takes the same time to get to dublin but just takes a different route. It also leaves from the derry bus depot and pulls in at bus aras.

Yeah, be careful which bus you get.

One is direct, the other stops at every possible stop it can.

Thanks Folks. I doubt the bus is an option really. They are from a company I work with and liked the idea of taking the train but that doesn't really seem feasible so I guess the only real option is a hire car.

Many thanks for the replies, they were very helpful.

Train from Derry to Belfast is longer than bus. Also the enterprise can be unreliable, and I mean breaking down rather than late.

That said both train routes are fairly scenic.

Depends what they want, to just get there bus from Derry to Belfast would be faster, as for Belfast to Dublin, train will be faster (when working) during rush hours only.

Train would be more comfortable too for the relatively long journey.

With respect the Enterprise reliability has improved significantly since the generator vans were put in place - the likelihood of a failure is very small.

OP, it is perfectly viable to get from Derry to Dublin by train. It will take longer than the road journey as it goes via Coleraine and Belfast, but it is perfectly doable.

On a weekday you have the following options:
    Depart Derry 07:13
    Arrive Belfast Central 09:39
    Depart Belfast Central 10:35
    Arrive Dublin 12:44

    Depart Derry 09:33
    Arrive Belfast Central 11:39
    Depart Belfast Central 12:35
    Arrive Dublin 14:44

    Depart Derry 11:33
    Arrive Belfast Central 13:39
    Depart Belfast Central 14:05
    Arrive Dublin 16:17

    Depart Derry 13:33
    Arrive Belfast Central 15:39
    Depart Belfast Central 16:05
    Arrive Dublin 18:15

    Depart Derry 15:33
    Arrive Belfast Central 17:39
    Depart Belfast Central 18:05
    Arrive Dublin 20:15

The route from Derry along the north coast is one of the most scenic anywhere in Ireland which is an added bonus.
