€2000 Gaming PC Build Advice

    Hi all,
I've been keeping an eye on this forum for a while now with the hope of replacing my current setup (an ageing phenom build c. 2008). It's been a while since my last build (aforementioned phenom) so please bear with me ;)

    1. What is your budget? ~ €2000

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer?
Will be used for gaming and work. I tend to play RTS games along the lines of Rome 2, but will likely sink quite a bit of time into the new witcher game when that shows up .For work I typically use AutoCAD, Revit, Photoshop (though not doing anything too demanding) and google sketchup.

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes,

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? Yes, an 'old' Fractal design XL I picked up two years ago when i was last itching for an upgrade.

    5. Do you need a monitor?
I'm currently running a basic 23" 1080p LG in a dual setup with an old co-opted Dell CRT (c.2000). I'd be hoping to replace the dell with something newer, possibly greater than 1080p and with an IPS panel,

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [Keyboard/Mouse/Wireless Card/Card Reader/Speakers/etc.]
A half decent mouse would be nice and i'll be looking to upgrade to a decent keyboard in the not to distant future so any recommendations are welcome.

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Yes,

    8. How can you pay? Bank Transfer or Visa Debit

    9. When are you purchasing? Hopefully within the next week or so,

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? Louth

I've been toying with the idea of a X99 based build for a little while, though in all honesty it's probably overkill for my needs and would come at a fair premium?

Looking at monitors HWVS have a 25" 1440p Dell U2515H for ~ €300, has anyone any thoughts on this?

    Thanks for your help.

Personally 4k is not something I'd be wanting to get into this side of 2015.

You think it might be a better idea to hold off buying for a while?
To be honest i'm not really bothered with 4k right now and was hoping not to go overboard on graphics spending. Perhaps it might be better to start off with a solid base now and decide to upgrade to 4k later on when it makes more sense?
    Thanks for the feedback.

That is a 1080p very high/ ultra gaming rig.

in a few months you'll have no problem selling that gpu and getting one of the supposed 8 gig cards dropping from nvidia..

Hi sterling, thanks for the reply.
As i mentioned in the op I have a spare case laying around that can be used so that's another €65 off. Just a question about that cpu, would you recommend getting a separate cooler for it or is it not worth the money?

Also if I were to upgrade the gpu to one of those new cards you mentioned would I need a new power supply?

Yeah a new cooler forgot. Stock one is fine but for overclocking you definitely should have one.

    Hyper evo Is 30 euro.
Or a nice noctua one be more expensive.

No I factored in psu for new card also. That will run a 2 card set up.

Newer cards have really low power draw compared to older ones.

You need to make sure your case can accommodate the gpu size also just check for the cooler too.

I'd be going 4k with that budget although I'd agree that it might be worth waiting until later this year. Ideally getting something IPS with FreeSync and/or GSync. You should be able to get 27-30" 4k Freesync monitors for less than €400 by the end of the year.

I'd also get something better than 600w for an SLI/Crossfire setup. 750-800w should have you covered.

Granted stock 970's only use about 150-160w of power but overclocking them pushes them closer to 200w and you might change to more power hungry cards in future. AMD's new high end cards are rumored to be in the 250w region and Nvidias new titan will be similar. You only want your PSU maxing out at around 60% anyway for efficiency.

When ordering off those sites, does it mean the shipping is quite high? Since your probably ordering from multiple sources?

No you only order from hardwareversand. Delivery is a flat €12.

I can get on board with most of that but 32 gigs of ram? For what exactly? That seems to be "dog licking his bollox" type of decision. Because I can! :P

The guy wants a gaming pc, maybe he wants more and run virtual machines, lot of browser tabs, with prices this low I would choose 32/64gb ram instead of 16gb, also combined with the i7 you want to use quad channel memory, buying 4x4 is waste of money.. if you buy a new computer get 4x8 :)

    with prices this low

Low? Memory is relatively very expensive at the moment. Especially if you're spending €90 per 8GB. Event €60-€70 per 8GB is expensive, and would have a negligible or non-existant performance different.

its DDR4... but still not really expensive

Memory is very expensive. There was a time you could get 8GB for €20.

if you have a 2000 euro budget you should not care about few euro price difference for memory
