Hi all, opinion sought if you don't mind, I currently have an iPhone 5, have it for nearly 2.5 years, the battery life is getting pathetic and the camera has stopped working as there is damage around it from being dropped(2 small kids will do that!)
I am after an android device in the 200-300 budget, unlocked, hoping to get a slightly bigger screen, maybe 5"...am techy but that into phones that I would be rooting etc., from reading around the nexus 5 or one plus one seem to be popular and within budget? Where is best to buy, any other phones to consider? I don't play games on my phone or store all that much so 16gb would suit...any tips on a mover from iPhone to android looking for a smooth a transition as possible?

Moto G is your best bet imo . Arguably the best android ever built value for money wise ! There are three different iterations of this phone . Moto g being the original then the moto g 4g was launched with added 4g capabilities and micro sd slot and now the most current moto g 2014 no 4g but has a micro sd card slot + a bigger screen 5" and a better camera than the aforementioned 2 . All phones have the same processor and 1gb of ram. hope this helps

Recommending a mono g with a budget of 300 is idiotic. There have been other phones built in the last century. I'd personally get the opo If your budget can stretch, perhaps wait for the one plus two to be released which may drop the price of the first one.

I would advise to wait 2 months if at all possible. March is the time when new models are released and older versions get reduced in price!

Thanks for that, yes the phone is working ok, just no camera, so can wait awhile before getting another...

Don't bother with the moto g, they are knocking on abit with that snap 400 chipset that every cheap phone has these days. Your budget supercedes what it offers. I'd grab the oppo or a one plus one. Someone will direct you to somthing more in tune with your budget.

Get two then one for each pocket! Moto G rocks! Get the new one and pocket 150 notes of your budget! I love being idiotic when it saves me money.

MotoG has repeatedly been voted the best budget phone. There's an even cheaper Moto E, but not sure about availability in Ireland.

Kids these days, my first phone was a 3310. Still works funnily enough, though could do with a new battery.

he's not on a budget though. not everyone is happy with an awful camera, average battery, average screen, years old CPU, 1gm ram etc etc.

For 300 beans you can get so much more, a phone that'll last years.

The Moto G 2014 is already looking a bit archaic even at the price, a refresh of it with a Snapdragon 410 and an extra gig of ram and it might still deserve its reputation. Would have made more sense than bumping the screen size.

They need to take the jump up in CPU for sure. The battery is awful too, have seen people barely get a day out of it.

Its the best budget phone yes, But why recommend it to everyone if they have a larger budget?

It seems to be people who know nothing about phones recommending it even with a €300 budget.

I know the Chinese route isn't for everyone, but the Redmi 2 and that new Meizu are what I'd look at in that price range.

Ya thought about the Chinese phones but would be concerned about warranty issues/after sales support and the shear efforts of getting the thing to work well in an irish network...

Well, warranty and after sales, you're pretty much taking your life in your own hands, that's part of the trade off. But working with an Irish network should be just a matter of correct frequencies, which can be checked preorder.

Does it have to be new? There are some great bargains out there for second hand phones. You can find a seller who likes to try out different models for 3 - 6 months and then sell it on before trying out something else.
