Would you miss your lowest gear when going up-hill?

On a 10 speed SRAM 12-27, the 2nd easiest gear would be a 24. On an 11 speed Campy it'd be 25, with a 23 being your 3rd easiest gear.

So would you be happy doing those hills with a gear that is harder than your current 2nd easiest gear?

If that's all good, then the 12-23 will be fine. And you are clearly a very good climber! A 12-23 would be more the sort of thing I'd expect for fairly flat TT'ing, so perfect for a flatish Tri.

If you'd rather have a (marginally) easier gear than your current then the 28 is good. You can also get a 12-28 if you're happy with 12 as your smallest cog.

We can't really tell you what to pick unless you tell us what you want to change about your current gearing?

Current Gears are Shimano 6700 Triple...

i dont go into my Smallest gear its really if im building up speed after coming off a Hill its when i drop into the smallest cog, and would normally drop down once that speed is gone.

at the moment I'm really see my peak on the bike for speed, on the flats so i want to be able to hold that peak for longer, and looking at a cassette which is both good for flats and for hill climbs short and fast, without being to demanding on the legs,

with most Tri around the Country being abit hilly

    Limerick Tri Elevation
    Elevation Gain: 377 ft
    Elevation Loss: 365 ft
    Min Elevation: 175 ft
    Max Elevation: 338 ft

    Little Bo peep
    Elevation Gain: 1,640 ft
    Elevation Loss: 1,614 ft
    Min Elevation: 162 ft
    Max Elevation: 778 ft

It takes 5 minutes to change a cassette. I like to have an 11-25 for flat spins and an 11-28 for hilly spins.

If it's a pan flat TT, get an 11-23 as well.

I'd dispense with the triple as well. If you can afford a new chainset.

No problem. Have I confused the issue too much though? If not I'll attempt to muddy it more ;).

In retrospect, with a triple up front I doubt you'll need an 11-28, this would give you a lowest gear of 30x28. You'd want to be doing some serious climbing or be a fairly large unit to use that. If you're going to keep the triple, I'd say an 11-25 is all you need.

Neither of those is hilly. Kenmare is somewhat hilly with two ramps in it, most races are flat. Tris are not targeted at the "colour run brigade" much like the sportifs in cycling, so its all about making them as easy as possible,

So would you say 11-25 would do for course just like the above ?

I would 12-25 given you have a ten speed set up. You won't spin out the 12 and the closer spacing of the 12-25 over a 11-25 is nicer in a TT IMHO.
