I'm considering an off-the-shelf template, from the likes of CargoCollective or TemplateMonster for my new website - I'm a photographer.

What is the difference between the types of template I have listed above?

My site won't be interactive - as in, no client access. Dropbox will do for that.

    So....

    1. Looks good.
    2. Easy for me to edit - i.e. add remove images and menus/categories. I really know zip about all this.
    3. Works on computer, iPad, mobile device - as in, looks good on all of them.

Any preferences for either CargoCollective or TemplateMonster?

And any thoughts on the different types of templates?

    Many thanks.

    D.

Ps. Just found this comparison site...

    http://websitesetup.org/cms-comparison-wordpress-vs-joomla-drupal/

Would still be grateful for some expert opinion though. Tks.

The names you mention are pieces of web software (platforms) (wordpress, magento, joomla etc.) which all do different things.

    wordress -- blog
    magento -- online shop
joomla -- modular content management system (cms)
    prestashop -- online shop

So the templates from these websites are designed to work with the specific platform, so when you download it you can install it.

It's horses for courses, any of the 'cms' platforms will do the job, some are more convoluted than others to setup especially for the non-developer, have a read and do some tutorials and see how you go.

    Thanks for the reply.

Lots of Photography templates available for WordPress - appears to be the most popular choice in my business.

I would say WordPress is the most popular CMS in your industry, in fact WordPress is probably the most popular CMS period.

It's a good choice if you're looking for a low-cost, least-technical option with plenty of support/themes/plugins etc etc etc.

Have you considered using an online service such as SmugMug? Their service is very reasonably priced and you can upload your original images so you don't have to worry about optimising them for the web.

    SmugMug is great.

But, to my mind, it's so slick, it looks like you've chosen the easy route, and doesn't create the right impression, IMHO.

Here is a CargoCollective site that I really like. Great work presented in a clean, simple way.

I'm not sure which CargoCollective template he's using, but, to be honest, I'd be happy with it. I'd just change the font and make the white background whiter. Apparently, on CC it's possible to make a copy of a site that you like and then edit it.

I don't even know if it's WordPress or whatever. Is it possible to tell?

    Thanks.

CargoCollective is also a cloud hosted service, it's not available as a WordPress template.

    1. What's a cloud hosted service?

    2. What are the pros/cons of such a service?

    Many thanks.

If you buy a WordPress template, you need to organise your hosting, install and configure the template and any required plugins. You also need to keep the software updated to prevent the website being hacked.

With a hosted service, you generally pick your template and colour scheme and start adding your content. You are restricted from doing too much because the company providing the service have it locked down.

My advice would be to start with a hosted service - given your queries, hosting your own site will require a level of technical ability that may be beyond you currently.

    Thanks for the reply.

    Am very tempted by WordPress.

Did a search using various choices and came up with these two. Any views?

In truth, I probably prefer the first one.

    Thanks.

I've now narrowed it down to these...

    http://koken.me/

    Will probably go with Koken.
