Am planning to buy a new car soon, would appreciate some advice before dipping into the shark-infested waters of the dealerships!
List price about 24k, will be paying cash. No trade-in.
Is there usually any room for negotiation on price, if so what kind of ballpark would be sensible?

There is always room for negotiation. However how much depends on alot of factors such as dealer margin, demand, are you financing it, etc. No set formula really. If you are financing then remember that the dealer gets a commission from the bank for introducing a new customer so haggle harder for a better discount.

The best thing to do is shop around different dealers for the best deal and let them earn your business. There can be a huge difference between them.

Depends on the car, if it's in demand then probably a smaller discount. If it's something likely to be a hard sell they would be more open to discounting it.

If the car is in stock and doesn't require the ordering process it's likely you will get a better deal on it. Anything with a waiting list is unlikely to get much discount.

Thanks - I'll adopt the poker face and set to.
