    I was at it, very good talk. Interesting from a PPL perspective to see how some of the forecasting is done and how it affects aviation. Also nice to see stuff I already know that some of the met enthusiasts/amateur forecasters don't, coding of TAFs, METARs, SIGMETS, warnings and why rapid changes of pressure are important to be made aware of etc. Local mechanical turbulence at thresholds such as Shannon was brought up, what wind conditions cause it, etc. Encouraging to see the more experienced forecasters like Evelyn Cusack asking questions too. They have a conference in March, one of the talks will be about the role of TS in the AF447 accident.

    Yes I was at it too and it was nice to see some of the events that she was on duty for (the 61G86KT event at Shannon last year, during which they couldn't even hear the phones ringing). It surprised me that there is only one forecaster on duty per shift, and that TAFs can get delayed if they have to issue briefings for the rescue services.

    The whole talk was recorded and the video will be posted on the IMS website (members area).

    I was there and it was excellent. A question was asked how SIGMET's are communicated to aircraft travelling. Obviously via ATC was the answer, but I thought there is also an electronic means (e.g. a cabin printout) for some A/C as well, no?

    You can request a sigmet via ACARS, or the company ops can push one to you via ACARS (i.e. printout in cockpit), but they originate and are disseminated by ATC.

    Acars is great but if your on a wifi enabled aircraft then it's even better. Most of us have iPads or tablets and are able to get hold of the latest sigmets and weather. In the US most of the "weather channel" type apps utilise the NOAA Doppler radar returns to give you live moving map pictorials of lines of weather, cb's etc. Flight radar is also good for giving you an indication of traffic flows, holding and likely landing runways if outside of atis coverage.
