Fibre connection

    Hi All

Have a quick question and hope somebody may be able to help.

Recently bought and renovated a house in Limerick and wired the downstairs with CAT 5e cable (I requested CAT 6 but that's another issue!) which all terminate under the stairs in the cloakroom. The main phone line is at the door so I got an engineer to bring CAT 5e from the main line up the wall and over the roof into the cloakroom. So far so good.

I joined with Vodafone and got the router connected (situated under the stairs) and now have good (8 megs) wired broadband throughout the house and the wifi signal is strong enough.

When I joined with Vodafone they said they would need 30 days to see if I could get fibre. When the time elapsed I called them up to check and they said I could get it but that I would only see a slight increase to 11 megs (I am a fair bit away from the cabinet - Castletroy in Limerick). An engineer came out this morning and said that the current setup I have is not suitable for fibre - that I would need the main router beside the front door where the main telephone line is and he could then tack a wire on to the wall and drill a hole through the wall to lead back to the cloakroom. He said this is due to the difference in the fibre cable to the original phone line.

I am very reluctant to have this work done (which would upset my wife) as the whole point of moving everything under the cloakroom was to hide wires and routers etc. I just want to know if the guy was right or is there a way for this to be done using the current setup I have? As the broadband speed improvement will be tiny I am not doing it to see huge improvements immediately but thought I would get the house ready for better speeds over time - hence I sent him away without any work being done at this stage.

Thanks in advance for any advice

What he's talking about doing is what you've already done. The existing cat5e is plenty to run a data extension on. How long is the run from the MDP at the door to the cloakroom?

Thanks ED E - I have sicne called him back and he is calling out again this afternoon to take another look. Didn't make any sense to me at all - I think the fact that he was there at 8.45am put me on the backfoot! Will let you know how I get on.

Distance is only 5 metres or so (up behind the wall, over the roof and down the other side into the cloakroom).
