Should I get my hopes up about job interview?

Yesterday, I went for a job interview. It was for a graduate position in a highly sought-after role and it involved carrying out a presentation.

It's a very specialist area and I have a Masters in the subject as well as having carried out an internship in a similar role.

I feel that my presentation was well received; there were a lot of approving nods throughout from the interviewers, and although the interview was quite grilling in parts, I did feel that I held my own and managed to answer everything pretty confidently. At the end of the interview, they told me that I would find out if I was successful by the end of the next week.

As I was leaving, one of the HR assistants walked me to the door, and just before I left, she said, "You did really well there, you should be happy with that, so hopefully Anna* (the other HR officer) will be in touch with you next week."

Should I take that as a sign to get my hopes up?

No you shouldn`t get your hopes up, but well done!

You probably did do well, but that doesn`t mean someone else did not impress them more. There is nothing you can do anyway, so try not to think of it too much, assume you didn`t get it and be busy!

Don't get your hopes up, no. Because it'll be yes or no, and getting your hopes up won't influence that. Keep putting out applications and just put it out of your head. You'll hear soon enough.

Thanks, I'm trying not to get too excited. It's just when they did make a point of addressing how well they felt I did in the presentation, I couldn't help but cling on to that!

It could indeed be that they were very impressed, or it could be them acknowledging that it's a tough thing to do. You never know what the other candidates are like, so it's prudent to not get too excited.
