Mini wouldn't suit my needs but if I won the lotto I would definitely have one as a daily car, love them especially the cooper and cooper s. There are some 'packs' that are optional extras, look out for used minis with chilli pack and other.

Cooper is ridiculously hard on petrol. Girlfriend had an 03, it broke her heart. Electrical problems a plenty meaning a new loom was required, wheel speed sensors were causing the dials to go crazy, a new radiator was installed and a week later I boiled it and blew the head gasket. To be fair hers was a bad one but it was enough to scare her off for life. 06 on model was a far better car I believe.

You had a serious lemon! I don't find the R50 cooper bad on petrol, late 30s mpg. Not geared for motorways in fairness.

In answer to the original question.
One and cooper gearboxes before 04 give trouble. Listen for whine.
Powersteering pump gives up in pretty much all of them. No real warning as far as i know. Window motors will give up in pretty much all of them. Certain production runs have airbag "connectors" that don't make a very good connection. I've done a lot of diy so the repair bills for her car over many years have been pretty small in fairness. cheaper/les repairs than many German cars over the same period I'd guess.

Ireland not great in general for maintaining cars as they get older and the stereotypical mini owner may have been less clued in than most about checking oil etc.

    Great cars to drive.
