When does a lamb offically become a hogget?

Just wondering: when does a lamb offically become a hogget for livestock unit counting purposes (i.e. that can be included in your stocking rate calculation) ?

For us it's when then next generation start dropping. Not sure if that's correct for the calculations though

Interestingly, have come across a few hoggets that put up 4 teeth inside the year. One hogget ram in particular had 4 teeth up before the end of the summer, and his mate who was born the same week as him, didnt have any! I would have thought someone was trying to pull a fast one, only I reared him myself . Anyone else seen that?

As regards, when they become a hogget, for me it is once you hit the month that they would be a year old. But to look at them, some are still like lambs until later in the summer. I suppose they are truely hoggets when they start stretching again - that next phase of growth...

Think my planner used to upgrade them from lambs to hoggets in july on the reps form. Apx 15 months old.

Id personally always think that too. I start calling them hoggets after christmas time. Without doing it on purpose. Not sure why th planner left it till 15 th. Maybe it was.to keep my nitrates down

When they get their 2front teeth. Factories will class them as hoggets not lamb then.
