What is the best way to fit these erratic life choices into a CV....

For many years I took an unusual job path: I worked summers with a contractor (I'll keep it vague) during and after college. I saved every cent (did not drink alcohol, for example) and twice I took a whole 5 months off to take what I'd saved and travel cheaply around the world. When I came back, I rejoined the contractor for another 6-8 months. So, the dates look very "potted", and I'm not sure how to neatly slot it into a CV.

    Sort of like this:

Jan 2013 – July 2013: Working with the contractor

    July 2013 – Jan 2014: Travel

March 2014 – June 2014: working with the contractor

    July 2014 – November 2014: Travel/other things

I'm trying to create a nice neat resume/CV, should I include all of these dates, or perhaps add an asterisk and note the months I was away travelling? Maybe something like this:
January 200X -- March 200Y*: worked with contractor *excluding XYZ dates when I embarked on travel to
Any help is much appreciated, AC.

depends on how far back this was. If its more than say 5 years ago your * idea sounds fine to me.

State the complete length of employment in your CV.

    Position_______________________January 2013 - June 2014 (contract position)
    Company

    - Bullet point selling yourself 1
    - Bullet point selling yourself 2

When talking about the position in the interview, you can state it was multiple contracts, with periods of inactivity or travel between each contract period. I wouldn't bother trying to explain this on your CV as it's too wordy.
