Sorry, maybe I am still asleep here but do you mean you want a physical handbrake as opposed to the electronic one in the Passat?

Is there anything wrong the 06?
Cause if the car is going fine then changing to an 08 just to have cheaper tax seems like a bit of a mad idea.
Also by proper handbrake did you mean instead a proper boot?

Sorry meant the passat has a button/electric handbrake I'd prefer a good old fashioned one. I've had a few issues alright and don't have it long. So its more than the free tax really . Appreciate your reply sound

Would you not go for a 09-10 Mondeo? They have a good old fashioned handbrake and are cheaper to buy second hand than a Passat etc. You would get a younger car for the same money. They are a lovely car and actually hold the road better than a Passat. I myself have a B6 Passat for the past 5 years and love it but I would be very happy with a Mondeo.

You will struggle to find any decent 08 car especially once similar in size to your Passat, for €4k plus your Passat. Cheap to tax cars even 6 year old examples fetch strong money because everyone wants them.

the 1.9 car you have now is hardly high tax, what are you going to save E300 a year at a push? only 13 years to recoup the 4 grand...

I'll look into a mondeo thanks.

The tax is only one reason really. As I said my son's sick. We travel to Dublin a lot and to appointments 4 days a week so want a reliable car.

An 08 is still 7 years old. Its not necessarily gonna be more reliable than your 06.
Even a 10 reg is 5 years old, and might have more to go wrong then your 1.9 Passat.
