I have a budgetof €20K. I am interested in a 4 DoorLuxury Car e.g. 2008-2009 Merc S320, Jaguar XJ,Audi A8, BMW 730D. Most of the above would have beenpushing $100K New, but can now be got for a fraction of the price. I need to find something that will serve me well for up to 2 years when I will probably change again. I’m very interested in youradvice & any other options I should look at.

LS460, there's a couple of them going for €15-20k on Carzone.

I was gonna suggest stretching the budget and getting an LS600h.

Not in the same class as a S Class but still alot of car is the Lexus GS450H:

Thanks for all the Replies. I will look at those. I just sold my Lexus GS450H, which really served me well and never gave me trouble, but I wanted to change of scenery. Hard to beat that motor. Many of the Mercs & BMWs I've seen don't have the same features, unless they were added as expensive extras.

Out of your original list I'd say the Jag XJ will probably be the heaviest depreciator meaning you will find a better or high spec one within your budget.

A Volkswagen Phaeton is worth looking for too, very rare on these shores though.

If I was spending 20k and wanted something luxury, I'd maybe try to go for something a little unusual that isn't common on the roads. Be a bit different.

Don't know which car mind you!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 181 ✭✭Redtop

Thanks "bazz26". What's the Reliability & Cost of Ownership like on the Jag XJ ? With it's 2.7 Diesel engine, the Tax is coming in at 1,200, whereas the Merc S-Class is pushing 1,500.

Maserati Quattroporte maybe, but you'd be looking at an older model for that budget - maybe 04/05.

A good friend of mine has one of these and although i've only ever been a passenger it has always felt and looked very budget to me. He certainly complains enough about The servicing cost so maybe thats a sign that if something Goes wrong your ****ed.

I'd agree with you, the pre 2007 facelifts look cheap as chips on the inside, really disappointing for a €190k car.

is it petrol or diesels that you are looking at and what is your annual mileage? I am only asking because the motor tax on the petrols may well be higher on the emissions rate than the CC one... Many would consider the A6 or 5 series and E class luxury cars, with the added benefit of way cheaper maintenance and running costs, I think the E class from 2010 on is a gorgeous looking car...

I was browsing 7 series the other day and saw this one, which looks like a beauty...

a CL500 maybe?? :) it is a 2 door though but meets the 100k criteria and the deprecation is whopper so there cheap enough now!

Always thought it was nice than the S

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Just remember that these cars that have lower emissions and lower motor tax will retain their used values stronger. Those with higher motor tax tend to cost less because the majority of joe public doesn't want them. The petrol variants even more so.

A wild card to through into the mix also might be a Citroen C6. Uses the same 2.7d found in the Jag, suffers huge depreciation but they are still fairly luxurious and rare. Finding one could be challenging though.

Had the joy of being in one the other day 00 CL500 cost peanuts and the power was amazing 5L V8, smooth auto box and glides on air suspension.

bazz this is speculation but I would not be surprised if at some point the emissions brackets are changed and the rates upped and CC left alone. When you look at the hit that the government are taking on the top end luxury cars being brought in for 18% VRT and E270 a year to tax! such as this audi A7 6 pot diesel...

    http://www.independent.ie/life/motoring/car-reviews/mega-audi-a7-turns-up-the-power-while-its-new-ultradiesel-returns-over-60mpg-30928256.html

People who buy brand new luxury cars are in the minority and rarely troubled by the cost of them. However ordinary joe buying their brand new eco car costing €200 to tax a year are more plentiful so less likely to be discouraged from doing so.

As a whole from Revenue's perspective it is better to take in smaller rates of motor tax, VRT and VAT from a larger number of drivers than the odd lotto winner or self made well off entrepreneur to splash the cahs. It's the ordinary joe that they get their steady revenue from rather than the occasional big ticket.

You are pretty much down to s class, sl, or cl Mercs,
    Bmw 7 series
    Audi A8
    Jaguar xj
    Lexus Ls.

For 20k, I'd be looking at S class from 08 or better or similar A8

Nice motor, Thanks, but I really need a 4 Door and MPG is off the charts with a 5L Petrol, as I do up to 20K miles per year.

What about something like this ?

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Mercedes-Benz/CLS-Class/C-SERIES/201442227753436/advert?channel=CARS

Bit of cash left over for tax and insurance etc.

I test drove a few CLS 350's before buying a GS450H, they are gorgeous cars. One thing about the cars linked above though is that they are looking dated now, mostly on the front, the lights etc. I would buy an older one for <10k but paying above that for the same design isn't worth it imo.

I remember seeing it when I was thinking of changing my car but decided to hold off and save up a bit and increase my budget.
Looks lovely though although I'd prefer it with black leather.

The entire brand would you say? Even bloody A-class and 1 series?

I would have thought those brands are generally middle class and their 7 series, S-class and A8's are the luxury ones.

I know they might not be in the same league as them luxury cars but what about a Volvo S80. You could get a nice one from 2010 or 11 or even 12 for the same money.
They do have a classy interior are quite big are comfy too. Volvo do make some of the best and most comfortable car seats.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

is the tax on the LS600h considered to be in the top bracket of the cc based system pre 2008?
or do they fall into another bracket as they are hybrid?

What fuel/technology powers the car make no different to cars taxed prior to 2008.

whats the general concensus on the asking price for this car?
    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=85314115480675810&message=You%20searched%20for%3A%20Lexus%20LS600H%2E%20Your%20search%20returned%20one%20vehicle%2C%20which%20is%20shown%20below%2E&CFID=133887446&CFTOKEN=10853009&jsessionid=f030983e1ecec5c7083c7624621665b1f688

albeit a lot of car, but its an 8yr old car at this stage...condition wise looks to be a top quality example though

Motor tax website has this at 1809eur for annual road tax...didnt realise you could pop in the reg plate on that site and it would give back the rate. Handy

PSV rate meaning it could have been taxed as a taxi or limo afaik.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 181 ✭✭Redtop

The VRT Calculator indicates that it depreciated by 91%. I am not sure what the New List Price was in 2007, but if I assume it was in the range of 125K, then that would suggest that the VRT values it at 11K. Even if we assume this value is very conservative, the asking price of 27,950 still seems way too high and the Road Tax is Absolute Robbery. I'm sure it's a Fantastic car, but not worth the asking price.

Thought it was off. The rear seats scream limo as well. Mileage seems very low.

ya I was thinking somewhere in the mid teens maybe a little more

Would it have really been 125k back in 07?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Remember it's being sold privately through the dealership so the owner may not realize it's current market value. Owners generally tend to think their cars are worth more than they actually are. €125k new is also conceivable as they were expensive and may also have had a lot of options ticked. They were also available in long wheel base though it doesn't mention that in the advert.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,610 ✭✭✭Padraig Mor

LS600H was €140k new back in 07, and that's after a VRT refund of over €22k due to being hybrid.

Sounds right. The LS460 was €125K new in 2007. The price list I have did not include the LS600H, as it was not available at the time, but I figured it was 15-20K more.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Idbatterim has already said most of what I was going to say :)

To add to that, buy a 7 year old luxobarge now for €20k, and you will lose more than €10k on it over the next 2 years. And you will find it hard to sell on. I think I would go for a 9 or 10 year old well looked after one myself for around €5k-€8k and not worry about depreciation or resale at all.

I've seen this 7 series in a close up video sent by another member and its in very poor shape cosmetically, wheels are in a very poor condition too.
Just goes to show what pictures can hide.

But, it comes with a full year BMW warranty.
