Loophole for 2 year cert on 10 year-old

    Hi,

My 2005 jallopy turn 10 this July, so my next NCT will only last until 2016.

    However...

I have been told by someone at NCT that if I get the test done more than 90 days before the due date, say in February, the Cert will actually run 2 years from that date, giving my 2005 car a cert that will not expire until Feb 2017.

    Anyone else done this?

that's correct as I understand it. The car wont be ten years old and is thus entitled to a 2 year cert.

    Anyone actually done it successfully?

Impossible, as this option was only opened last year.

    But I wouldn't call it a loophole

Options available to me in test centre are only from 20th April onwards and car was first registered on 15th June 2005. Is the 90 day rule a definite?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,380 ✭✭✭O.A.P

Test done on the 7-01-2009 and expired on the 5-1-2011.
The car was first registered 5-1-1999.
I got in just before the one year ticket for ten year old cars then.
Anyway my mums 05 car got a two year NCT last November.

I wouldn't call it a loophole as the NCT normally send you out a letter informing you of this.

Interesting, mines August 2005, might be worth booking now for a May 2015 date.

April to allow time for an initial no-pass

    Have you not faith!?

The last time I went for the NCT, I had to go to Longford due to avaiabiity shortage.

My car has four headlights, the sidelight being inside the high beam, so light from all lens when dipped is on.

The tester took ages to get the bonnet open. He then came out with a fail report claiming he couldn't get a reading on one of my headlights and that I must have put a bulb in upside down. For information, I am a Masters Degree qualified engineer and I had the lights set the day before (they were bang on, no adjustment required).

The dumb hick had put the Headlamp equipment in front of the wrong lens on one side!

I don't know, people with ginger hair..

Hee hee, there's a few nuckle draggers in my local centre too, but most of them are excellent.

I just booked April now, its right at the end of the month so will check back frequently for an earlier date.

Either ring up looking for an alternate date, or go the website and choose the reschedule option if already booked.

I did the early test trick on an 05 car and there were no issues.
Had an 05 rover 75 tested till end Jan 15. Got It tested in October 14 and got 2 years from that date so cert until October 16. Would have got a January 16 cert under normal circumstances.

You need to have passed the test earlier than 90 days before due date. So If due on 15 July, you would need to have passed before the 15th April. Allowing for a retest, you would want to be booking for 15th March. Result would be a cert until July 16 under normal circumstances. Using the early test, you will get a cert until march or April 2017.

Easiest to accept an online booking at whatever date is available. You can change it free online numerous times as long as you do it more than 5 working days ahead of the date you have. They regularly free up whole blocks of appointments so If you accept a may date now, I would guarantee that if you keep an eye on the website you will get a suitable date.
I know they don't seem to be very helpful with early dates on the phone bookings if you already have a valid test.

just looked up my current cert its due on the 9/08/15, so i would need to have the nct carried out before the 09/05/15 in order to get the two year nct then.

So testing the car more than 90 days before it's due date does away with the old method of the anniversary date being on the cert no matter how early or late it was tested?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,375 ✭✭✭bri007

Yeah once its more than the 90 days before your nct due date

mine was due on the 09/08/15, so i got a booking for 06/05/15, so its roughly 94 day or there abouts so i fall into that category, if that helps.

Thanks. Good to know this, my car is 05 and due on 30th Nov so if I'll aim to test it in August. How early can you apply for a test now?

I'm not so sure about this. Consider these two scenarios with seeking a test of a vehicle >=10 years old and more than 90 days before it's anniversary. This is based on what I believe the rules to be so please correct me if I'm wrong!

    1. If you're car is not NCT'd when tested then you will get the cert valid till the next test date it's due, i.e. its anniversary after 90 days or so

    2. If you're car is currently NCT'd then it is not eligible for testing till it reaches 90 days or less to its anniversary. You'll get your cert valid from the test date to 12 months after it's anniversary.

Riddle me this: my car was first registered on 14th March 2005, and passed it's test today.

    Shouldn't I have got a 2 year Cert ? They only gave me a March 2016 one .

    My car isn't 10 yet !

you're car has to pass the test a minimum of 90 days before its date of first registration to get 2 years.

i felt the same as you when i tested my 04 corolla there last year. date of first reg was November 28th, got the NCT done on November 11th (the car was not 10 years old at that point) and only got one year.

so really if the car is 9 years and 9 months old, or older, it only gets a 1 year test.

Where is that 90 days written in law ?

I think they're pulling a fast one one tbh. I tried to book my Audi 4 months before it's test and was told they couldn't book outside 90 days - that was in November last. And waiting times online are more than 90 days.

It has always been a feature of the NCT that you could test your vehicle within 3 months of it's anniversary and the receive a test cert valid till the next anniversary for testing. In the case of a first test on a vehicle after new (i.e. it reaches 4 years old), the car can be tested 6 months before anniversary.

that was about the time the system changed. Now if you test 90 days or more before the due date, you get a full cert...either one or two years (as approriate to the cars age).Once you pass the 90 days, you get a cert from the end of the current cert for a year or two years (ditto) which obviously could be up to 15 or 27 months

So they indeed pulled a fast one, as you can book your test anytime you wish.
If you tested it before 14th December 2014, you would have got cert valid for 2 years from test date. I.e. if test was on 5th December 2014, your cert would be valid until 5th December 2016, instead of 14th March 2016 like you have it now.

That's not the case anymore, as 6 months allowance before first test was scrapped.
Obviously as car can be tested anytime now (due to early voluntary testing) you can test it anytime, but if you test it more than 90 days before first due date (4 years), you will get a cert valid for 2 years from test date - not for 2 years from due date).
I.e. if car is 3 years and 7 months when you test it, it will get a cert valid until car will be 5 years and 7 months.

In the old system (before July 2014 when it changed) you could test it at 3 years and 7 months and get a cert valid until 6 years old.

Yeah, after reading this bit buried in the detail, it does seem to be the case that the 6month rule for ~4 year old cars has gone by the board :(

Vehicles tested on-time (i.e. within 90 days of the test due date) or late remain unaffected by this change.
