Please recommend a photography course for a child of 13 years.

I'd say any 13 year old would be better doing Art classes either through school or outside classes . Doubt any photography course would be geared for those under 16 - a good grounding in art , creativity would be much more beneficial - camera skills can be learned in late teens and he/she could just experiment till then.

Thanks. Already doing art in school. Unless there's a class she could take once a week or so we will just have to let her experiment with photography herself.

Art is a great foundation anyway in terms of composition, looking at colour and light - a study of form. She can take photos which she can then use as a basis for paintings also.

I'm sure there are tutorials on youtube that would be geared towards younger beginners which she might find interesting.

Using simple software like Picasa which is free would be a good starting point too - there are some filters she can apply (similar to instagram or phone photo software), crop tool, black and white conversion etc. Plenty to play around with and enjoy without needing any real instruction.

I don't think that any club/group would take a child without a related adult being present for obvious reasons.

I think the Dublin Photography School do a summer camp. Also I am pretty sure any of the 1 day workshops for beginners would also be suitable

Many clubs and organisations won't take children, due to insurance issues.

But, fair play to you for getting your child involved and interested. Check out your local camera clubs, and see if any of them can help. Alternatively, ask the school if they could recommend anything.

    Best of luck.

I think if she was a bit older the reply would be along the lines of "just get out and take shots" along with buy a book called Understanding exposure by Brian Peterson.
So why not take her to the park, beach or where ever and let find her own eye.

What about giving her a book or two to read on the subject.

Photography Guide for Kids by Neil Johnson is one and I'm sure there are others out there.
