Eircom cabinet question

Ok folks this might sound like a stupid question but as above is there anyway to request to be moved to a different cabinet or is everything hardwired in?

Basically I live on a cul del sac country road just outside balbriggan there are about 12 houses on this road all of which (that i'm aware of) are running off a cabinet about 3km away and can avail of efibre (well 7mb of efibre).

My issue is for some reason my house is running off a different cabinet that is 4.3km from me and means i'm stuck with a max speed of approx 1.5mb. My sister in law is basically on the same plot of land as me but due to being on a different cabinet I cant and probably never will get efibre.

Help me move out of 1990's internet speed please

My guess would be you're talking about exchanges not cabs.

Sometimes you'd have a situation on the border between two exchanges where there arent any free pairs running one way but there are in the other.

Do you know any of the others telephone numbers? Are you 01-ABCxxxx while they're 01-XYZxxxx?

If you order a new line it might come the "right" way, but its pot luck, and you need to cancel it quickly if not.

Some of the cabs in Balbriggan seem to be feeding in unusual ways on the surfance, I'm connected to my own cabinet very fortuitously, wheras my brother's cabinet is in his estate, but he's not connected to it, and the people in the estate are struggling with very low speeds. The cabinet that serves him is half way across the town and seems to be very unusually planned.

The routing of the cables underground really dictates things. I would say the chances of you getting anything changed in your favour is remote. Maybe FTTH is your only hope :(

Cheers for the replies folks sorry i did mean exchange and not cabinet. Its a pain speed wise and its infuriating as i seem to be the only one on the road that is affected with it.

I was told by eircom to submit a complaint as i was clearly mis-sold what i was buying. I moved over from Vodafone last week when my sister in law who lives beside me got fibre in. I called eircom sales and was told i was on the exact same line as my sister in law (provided them with landline number) and would get the exact same speed so naturally i signed up. The sales girl repeated 3 times that i would get the same speed as my neighbour which clearly isn't the case. What is the best case scenario i could hope for by making official complaint?

I'm going to ring today because that was the only reason i changed over (i'm actually paying more with eircom now than i was with Vodafone and getting less speed)

Pardon my ignorance but what is FTTH?

efibre = FTTC or Fibre to the cab: fibre-cabinet-copper-your house
FTTH: Fibre to the home: fibre-your house.

Capable of many Gbps(1000Mbps). In trials at the moment, will be coming as option in the next year or two where demand is high enough.

If you kick up a fuss you might get them to move your pair onto a different pole assuming theres a free pair.

I see said the blind man. Thanks for clearing that up...seeing as i'm on a country road though its doubtful demand would be high enough in my case.

I'm going to call eircom in the afternoon and make a complaint. In another related issue i haven't had broadband service since changing over there's some problem with exchange and engineer has to come out which is hopefully being done today. All in all not a good switch over to eircom for me.

Ps to answer your earlier question my number is slightly different from sister in laws they are 01690 and i am 01691.
Can i cancel said line and order a new one and just hope it comes from the nearer cabinet?

The different prefix *could* mean a different exchange, but if its Babriggan the exchange may be large enough to cover 01-69xxxxx.

If you get a chance to speak to the eircom technician ask him, he's most likely to know the existing cabling setup and can check for you.

If you're ordering a new line KEEP the existing line and order a new one, otherwise they'll just turn the line off and on again.

    Appreciate the replies ED E.

Just on the new line would i not need to pay more if i technically had two lines on the go?

    Keep Existing Line
    Order new line
    Have new line installed
Check if new line is on right cable path

    A. If the new line is, cancel old line
    B. If the new line isnt, cancel it

You will pay for a few extra days of one line either way, but its just within the transition period.

Ok eircom basically told me i cant do that and if i did i would have to foot the cost of a new line (not just line rental but laying costs). I said could i not just cancel it within the 14days and she said no they wouldn't really do that and its never come up before.

Basically a very polite "fook you very much" :-) Looks like i'm stuck with 1.5mb for a while and hope they update my exchange in 2016

If you're on a 5KM loop upgrading your exchange wont improve things. Itll be that way indefinitely.

And the kicks just keep on coming :P

But if my exchange/cabinet* does "get fibre" surely there'll be a knock on affect that my speed would go up even by a megabyte or two even though i am 4.3 km from it?

I'm not sure whether to cancel eircom or not it seems i am caught in no mans land with little to no hope of getting efibre. I could go back to Vodafone and resign myself to the fact i'll never have more than 1.6mb

*sorry i don't really get the distinction between the exchange and cabinet

Your exchange is currently ADSL2+. That goes out to about 6km usually. VDSL2, or "eFibre", goes into cabinets out on the streets and into some exchanges(complicated, but doesnt matter to you). VDSL reach is 2km in good conditions, less on bad copper. So upgrades in the exchange wont reach you, your modem just wouldnt connect, and a new VDSL cab placed on your line would only benefit you if its on the last 2km stretch of your line. This seems unlikely.

FTTH doesnt care about distance, but will hit low density areas like yours last.

If eircom are unwilling to reroute you fixed wireless is probably a better bet. Check the ireland offline map.

Cheers mate and thanks for all these replies.

Yeah I've checked out the map and the nearest cabinet to me is BRN2_006 and this is the one most of my road seems to be connected to - confirmed by eircom engineer. Seeing as eircom seem unwilling to allow me to change i don't really see a lot of options here.

Even fixed wireless seems very ropey around this area from things I've heard
